The Best Gutter Guards for New England Homes

An honest comparison of every common gutter guard type, from the crew that cleans out the ones that fail.

Reviewed by Josh Campbell, owner of Mr. Gutter · Updated October 2026

At a glance

For New England homes, fine stainless steel micro-mesh gutter guards are the best all-around choice because they keep out leaves, pine needles and shingle grit while letting water through. Screens, foam and brush inserts are cheaper but clog or trap debris. Mr. Gutter installs All Mesh Pro stainless mesh, which carries a no-clog performance guarantee, and Proflow aluminum guards.

Micro-mesh: the best choice for most New England homes

Micro-mesh guards cover the gutter with a fine mesh. Water passes straight through; leaves, pine needles, seed pods and the gritty runoff from asphalt shingles stay on top and blow off when they dry. That matters here, where white pines, oaks and maples surround so many houses.

The two guards we install

All Mesh Pro (Champion Gutter Products) is a fine stainless steel mesh guard, our pick for homes under pines and for roofs that shed a lot of shingle grit. It's backed by the manufacturer's warranty and a no-clog money-back guarantee. See the manufacturer's warranty details.

Proflow is a sturdy perforated aluminum gutter guard that sheds leaves and keeps the gutter covered. We'll tell you which one fits your trees and roof, and either way the price includes cleaning your gutters and downspouts and any repairs needed.

Where other guards fall short

  • Screens keep out leaves, but pine needles and seeds slip through the holes or wedge in them, and the screens themselves need cleaning.
  • Reverse-curve hoods guide water around a curved lip. In heavy downpours water can overshoot the gutter, and they're visible from the street.
  • Foam inserts fill the gutter with foam. Seeds sprout in them, grit packs into them, and they break down in sun and freezing weather.
  • Brush inserts sit in the gutter like a giant pipe cleaner. Leaves and needles tangle in the bristles and have to be pulled out by hand.

Are gutter guards worth it?

If your house has trees close to the roof, two or more stories, or you're paying for two or three cleanings a year, guards usually pay for themselves. You stop paying for cleanings, stop climbing ladders, and stop the overflow that rots fascia and soaks foundations. If your house has no trees nearby, regular cleanings may be all you need, and we'll tell you so.

Do gutter guards cause ice dams?

No. Ice dams form when attic heat melts snow on the roof and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. Clear gutters drain meltwater better than clogged ones. On houses where ice keeps forming at the edge, heat cables help.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gutter guard?
For most New England homes, fine stainless steel micro-mesh gutter guards, like the All Mesh Pro guards we install, are the best choice. They keep out leaves, pine needles and shingle grit while letting rainwater through.
What are the best gutter guards for pine needles?
Fine micro-mesh. Screens, foam and brush inserts all let pine needles in or trap them.
Are gutter guards worth it?
Usually, if you have trees near the roof, a tall house or you're paying for several cleanings a year. They replace cleanings and prevent overflow damage.
Do gutter guards work in heavy rain?
Good micro-mesh guards let water straight through the mesh. Reverse-curve hoods are the type most likely to let water overshoot in a downpour.
Do gutter guards cause ice dams?
No. Ice dams come from attic heat melting snow on the roof. Clear gutters drain meltwater better than clogged ones.
Are gutter guards the same as leaf guards, gutter covers or gutter screens?
Mostly, yes. Gutter guards, leaf guards, gutter covers, gutter screens, gutter protection, gutter filters and gutter shields are all names for products that cover the gutter to keep debris out. What matters is the design: fine stainless mesh like All Mesh Pro stops pine needles and shingle grit, while basic screens let smaller debris through.
How do your guards compare with LeafFilter, LeafGuard or Gutter Helmet?
Those are national brands, typically sold through in-home sales appointments and installed by subcontractors. We install Proflow aluminum and All Mesh Pro stainless mesh guards with our own crew for about half the national-brand price, and every installation includes cleaning your gutters and downspouts and any repairs needed.
Which gutter guards does Mr. Gutter install?
Two: All Mesh Pro, a fine stainless steel mesh guard with a no-clog performance guarantee, and Proflow, a perforated aluminum guard. Both cost about half what the national brands charge.
