Pawtucket grew up around the mills on the Blackstone River, and a lot of its housing still shows it: triple-deckers, two-families and worker houses built close together on small lots. Those homes have tall walls and short side yards. When a gutter overflows three stories up, the water lands in a strip of ground a few feet wide and has nowhere to go but down along the foundation. The larger lots around Oak Hill and Slater Park have mature oaks and maples. Oaks hold their leaves late, so gutters can clog again after an early fall cleaning. A second cleaning in late fall or a set of gutter guards takes care of it.
