Cheap to buy. Expensive to live with.

Why Gutter Foam Inserts Fail

Foam and brush inserts are the cheapest gutter guards on the shelf. On New England homes, they're usually the first ones we pull out.

Reviewed by Josh Campbell, owner of Mr. Gutter · Updated October 2026

At a glance

Gutter foam inserts fill the gutter with porous foam that lets water through but traps seeds, pine needles and shingle grit. Seeds sprout in them, grit clogs them, and sun and freezing weather break them down. Brush inserts tangle debris in their bristles. Fine micro-mesh guards are a more reliable alternative.

How foam inserts work, and why they stop working

  • They trap what they're meant to block. Seeds, pine needles and grit lodge in the foam instead of sliding off.
  • Things grow in them. Trapped organic matter holds moisture, and seedlings take root.
  • They break down. Sun, freeze-thaw cycles and moisture make foam crumble over time.
  • They slow the water. A clogged insert lets rain run over the top and off the edge.

Brush inserts have the same problem

Brush guards sit in the gutter like a giant pipe cleaner. Leaves and needles tangle in the bristles, and the only way to clean them is to pull the whole brush out.

What to use instead

Fine micro-mesh guards cover the gutter instead of filling it. Water passes straight through the mesh, and debris stays on top where it dries and blows off. The All Mesh Pro stainless mesh guards we install carry a no-clog performance guarantee. Compare every type in the best gutter guards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do gutter foam inserts work?
They work for a while, but they trap seeds, needles and grit, grow plants and break down in sun and freezing weather.
Can you remove foam inserts and install real guards?
Yes. We remove old foam or brush inserts, clean the gutters, make any repairs and install Proflow or All Mesh Pro guards.
Are micro-mesh guards better than foam?
Yes. Micro-mesh covers the gutter so debris stays on top and water passes through, instead of trapping debris inside the gutter.
