Twice a year for most. More under oaks and pines.

How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?

A practical gutter cleaning schedule for Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts homes, based on the trees around your house.

Reviewed by Josh Campbell, owner of Mr. Gutter · Updated October 2026

At a glance

Most Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts homes need their gutters cleaned twice a year: in late fall after the leaves drop and again in spring. Homes under oaks or pines often need three cleanings, while homes with micro-mesh gutter guards or few trees may need less.

Micro-mesh gutter guardsRarelyA quick check now and then

Why late fall matters most

In southern New England, oaks hold their leaves longer than maples, often well into November. A cleaning in early October can be undone within weeks. Aim for after most leaves are down and before the first hard freeze, so the gutters go into winter empty and can drain meltwater instead of freezing solid.

Why spring matters too

Spring brings maple seeds (the helicopters), pollen, buds and whatever blew in over the winter. Clearing it out before the summer thunderstorms keeps water off the siding and away from the foundation.

Signs you're overdue

  • Water spilling over the front of the gutter in a normal rain
  • Plants or seedlings growing out of the gutter
  • Gutters sagging or pulling away from the house
  • Downspouts that barely trickle
  • Dark stripes or stains on the siding below the gutters
Tired of the schedule? Gutter guards replace most cleanings, and ours include a full cleaning and any repairs when they go on.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my gutters?
Most homes need two cleanings a year, in late fall and spring. Homes under oaks or pines often need three.
When is the best time to clean gutters?
Late fall, after most leaves have dropped and before the first hard freeze.
Do I need to clean gutters with gutter guards?
Far less often. Good micro-mesh guards keep debris out of the gutter itself; an occasional check is usually enough.
