Keep the roof cold. Keep the water moving.

How to Prevent Ice Dams on Your Roof

What causes ice dams on Rhode Island and Massachusetts roofs, the fixes that stop them for good, and what to do when one is already forming.

Reviewed by Josh Campbell, owner of Mr. Gutter · Updated October 2026

At a glance

Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the roof and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. The lasting fix is keeping the roof deck cold with attic insulation, air sealing and ventilation. Clean gutters, roof-edge heat cables and careful removal by hand handle what's left.

What an ice dam is

An ice dam is a ridge of ice along the edge of your roof. Snow higher up melts, runs down to the colder eaves and refreezes. Each melt-freeze cycle makes the ridge bigger, until meltwater pools behind it and works its way under the shingles and into the house.

Why they form

The cause is almost always heat escaping from the living space into the attic: gaps around light fixtures and chimneys, thin insulation, and poor attic ventilation. A warm roof deck melts snow even when it's well below freezing outside, while the overhang past the walls stays cold.

If an ice dam is already forming

  • Don't chip at it with a hammer, axe or shovel. It breaks shingles and bends gutters.
  • Don't climb an icy roof or ladder.
  • Be careful with salt products, which can harm plantings, metal and finishes.
  • Watch ceilings and walls below for stains, and photograph any damage for your insurance company.
  • Call for ice dam removal. We carefully cut channels through the ice by hand so the water can drain, without damaging the roof.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to prevent ice dams?
Keep the roof deck cold: air-seal and insulate the attic floor and make sure the attic is ventilated. Heat cables and clean gutters help in spots where that isn't practical.
Do gutter guards cause ice dams?
No. Ice dams come from attic heat melting snow. Clear gutters, guarded or not, drain meltwater better than clogged ones.
Does homeowners insurance cover ice dam damage?
Many policies cover sudden interior water damage from ice dams, but coverage for removing the dam itself varies. Check with your agent and photograph any damage.
