A gutter is only as strong as what holds it up.

Gutter Hangers: Why Gutters Sag and How to Fix It

Most sagging gutters aren't bad gutters. They're bad hangers, or good hangers in rotting wood.

Reviewed by Josh Campbell, owner of Mr. Gutter · Updated October 2026

At a glance

Gutter hangers attach the gutter to the fascia board. Old spike-and-ferrule hangers loosen as wood expands and contracts, letting gutters sag and pull away. Hidden hangers screwed into solid wood hold far better. Sagging gutters are fixed by re-hanging them correctly and repairing any rotted fascia first.

Common types of gutter hangers

HangerHow it attachesHolding power
Spike and ferruleA long nail through the gutter into the fasciaWeak over time: spikes work loose
Hidden hangerA bracket inside the gutter, screwed into the fasciaStrong, and invisible from the ground
Strap hangerA strap fastened under the roof edgeGood where fascia is missing or unusual
Rod hangerA rod and bracket for slanted or decorative fasciaGood on trim and molding

Mr. Gutter installs hidden hangers on flat fascia and uses aluminum or copper rods where the fascia is slanted or has a molding, fastened with 1,000-hour salt-spray-tested screws.

Why gutters sag

  • Spikes work loose as the wood swells and shrinks with the seasons.
  • Hangers are spaced too far apart.
  • Wet leaves and ice add weight the hangers weren't built for.
  • The fascia board behind the gutter has rotted.

How sagging gutters get fixed

The gutter is re-hung with proper hangers fastened into solid wood and the pitch is corrected so water runs to the downspout. If the fascia is soft, it has to be fixed first or the new hangers won't hold. See gutter repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far apart should gutter hangers be?
Close enough to support the gutter under wet leaves and snow. The right spacing depends on the gutter size and the loads it carries, and hangers spaced too far apart are a common cause of sagging.
Are hidden hangers better than spikes?
Yes. Hidden hangers are screwed into the fascia and hold far better than spikes, which work loose over time.
Can you fix my sagging gutters?
Yes. We re-hang sagging gutters, correct the pitch and flag rotted fascia that needs attention.
