Parts of a Gutter System, Explained

A gutter system is more than the trough along the roof. Here's every part, what it does, and which ones fail first.

Reviewed by Josh Campbell, owner of Mr. Gutter · Updated October 2026

At a glance

A gutter system includes the gutter itself, end caps, miters (corners), outlets, downspouts, elbows, hangers, and extensions or splash blocks, and often gutter guards. Seams at corners and end caps, hangers and downspout elbows are the parts that fail or clog first.

What fails first

On most systems it's the seams (corners and end caps) as sealant ages, the hangers as they work loose, and the downspout elbows, which catch debris. That's why seamless gutters, hidden hangers and properly sealed corners last so much longer.
