Bristol sits on a narrow neck of land between Bristol Harbor and Mount Hope Bay, so much of the town is close to salt water. Downtown, along Hope Street and the side streets near the harbor, houses from the 1700s and 1800s stand close together, many with wood clapboards, detailed trim and old foundations. Downtown lots are small, with houses close to the sidewalk and to each other. Downspouts need to discharge where water will not pool against a foundation or run across a neighbor's yard. Extensions and careful placement solve most of it.
