We keep Bristol ice dams from soaking the cornices and walls of your older home

Downtown Bristol is full of houses built in the 1700s and 1800s, set close to Hope Street, High Street and the side streets near the harbor. Their eaves often hang right over the sidewalk, with wood cornices and trim just below the roof edge. When snow melts on those roofs and freezes at the overhang, the dam holds water against the shingles and the trim. Icicles grow over the front steps, and leaks show up first as peeling paint or a stain inside an upstairs wall.

Bristol sits on a narrow neck between Bristol Harbor and Mount Hope Bay, so winter storms here often bring a wet mix of snow and rain on a stiff wind. That wet snow is heavy and freezes hard. Out in the Bristol Highlands, Silver Creek and Mount Hope, capes and ranches under mature maples and oaks have a different problem: shade keeps snow on the roof, and gutters still holding late leaves freeze before they can drain.

When there is ice on your roof now, we remove it by hand. We carefully cut channels through the dam so the trapped water can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, protecting old roofing, trim and the gutters as we go, including copper and half-round gutters on older homes. Call (401) 274-3030 or send a photo of the roof edge, and we will respond the same business day with a free estimate.

Why ice dams form on Bristol homes

Old houses close to the street

Historic houses along Hope Street and High Street often have little attic insulation and eaves right over the sidewalk. Heat loss melts snow from below, the water freezes at the overhang, and icicles and dripping meltwater end up over steps and walks.

Wet snow off the harbor and bay

With water on both sides of town, Bristol snowstorms often come in wet and change to rain. That heavy slush soaks into the snow at the eaves and freezes into thick ice once the wind turns cold behind the storm.

Shade in the Highlands and Silver Creek

Mature maples and oaks shade many roofs in the Bristol Highlands, Silver Creek and Mount Hope. North-facing slopes under those trees hold snow far longer than sunny roofs downtown, giving a dam more time to build.

Exposed homes on Poppasquash

Homes facing open water on Poppasquash take the full wind off the harbor. Snow blows off the windward side and drifts deep on the sheltered side and in valleys, where it melts slowly into a cold gutter.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Bristol roof next winter

The first step is a gutter that can drain. We clean gutters and downspouts by hand in late fall, after the maples and oaks are done, so meltwater has a way out. On street-side eaves and valleys that ice up each winter, roof and gutter heat cables keep a channel open. Proflow and All Mesh Pro gutter guards keep leaves out so the gutters stay clear into winter. For older houses, attic insulation and air sealing usually make the biggest long-term difference; we do not do that work, so talk with an insulation contractor. A roof rake helps after heavy snow.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove ice dams on historic Hope Street homes?
Yes. We remove ice dams by hand, carefully cutting channels through the ice so trapped water drains, rather than chipping the dam off. On an older home that protects the roofing, trim and gutters, including copper or half-round gutters. Phone (401) 274-3030 or send a picture of the roof edge, and you will hear from us the same business day.
Why are there big icicles over my front door every winter?
Heavy icicles along the eaves usually mean meltwater is running to a cold roof edge and refreezing, which is how ice dams start. On older Bristol houses close to the street, that often points to heat escaping through the roof. Heat cables along that eave and better attic insulation, from an insulation contractor, both help.
Do you install heat cables in the Bristol Highlands?
Yes. We install roof and gutter heat cables throughout Bristol, including the Highlands, Silver Creek and Mount Hope. They keep a drainage path open along the eaves and through the gutters so meltwater does not refreeze. On shaded roofs that hold snow for weeks, they are often the most useful fix.
How do I get an ice dam estimate in Bristol?
Send the form on this page with a photo, or call (401) 274-3030. A clear shot of the roof edge, the icicles and any ceiling stains helps us understand what is happening. We respond the same business day, and the estimate is free.
