We stop Little Compton ice dams from leaking where old roofs meet new additions

Many Little Compton homes are old farmhouses that have been added onto over the years: an ell here, a kitchen wing there, a porch or a mudroom with a low roof. Each addition creates a valley or an inside corner where snow collects. Those corners melt and refreeze unevenly, and ice dams form right where the two roofs join. Water that backs up at a joint like that has an easy path inside, into walls and ceilings that may not show it for a while.

The land around the houses plays a part too. Fields and stone walls give the wind a long, clear run, so snow blows off one side of the roof and drifts deep on the other. Near Sakonnet Point, Warren's Point and the South Shore, storms off the ocean often bring snow and rain together, and the slush freezes along the eaves when the cold returns. Homes in Adamsville and around the Commons, with more trees nearby, keep their snow longer in the shade.

When an ice dam forms, we deal with it by hand. We cut channels through the ice so the water trapped behind it drains off the roof and out through the gutters, taking care with old shingles, trim and the gutters. Since homes here are spread out, a photo is a good place to start. Send one through the form or call (401) 274-3030, and we will respond the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Little Compton homes

Additions, ells and valleys

Farmhouses that grew over generations have roofs meeting at odd angles. Snow packs into the valleys and inside corners where an ell or addition joins the main house, and that is where meltwater tends to freeze and back up first.

Drifting snow across open fields

With fields and pasture around many houses, winter wind blows snow across the roof and drops it in deep drifts on the lee side. A drift holds more water than the snow around it and keeps feeding the eaves as it melts.

Mixed storms off the ocean

Close to the ocean and the Sakonnet River, Little Compton often gets storms that go from snow to sleet to rain. Slush soaks into the snow at the gutter line and freezes solid behind the storm, building a dam quickly.

Low porch and mudroom roofs

Many older homes here have a porch, mudroom or shed addition with a much shallower roof than the main house. Snow slides onto it from above, sits there and melts slowly, and a shallow roof is less forgiving when water backs up under the shingles.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Little Compton roof next winter

Start with the gutters. A cleaning in late fall, after the tree lines along the roads and walls have dropped their leaves, gives meltwater a way off the roof. Roof and gutter heat cables are worth putting in along the valleys, ell joints and low porch roofs that ice up every year. Where trees hang over the roof, a gutter guard helps the gutters stay empty into winter. Attic insulation and air sealing are outside what we do, but in an old farmhouse they often make the biggest difference, so it is worth asking an insulation contractor.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove ice where my addition meets the main house?
Yes. Valleys where an addition joins the main house are a common place for ice dams on older Little Compton homes. We cut channels through the ice by hand so the trapped water can drain to the gutter, working carefully around the shingles. Heat cables can then help keep that corner open in future winters.
My Little Compton house is out of the way. Can you look at an ice dam from photos?
Often we can get a good idea from photos of the roof edge, the icicles and any stains inside. Send them through the form or call (401) 274-3030. We get back to you the same business day, at no cost for the estimate. For heat cables or bigger jobs, we may suggest a service call for an on-site inspection, and its cost goes toward any work you agree to.
Why does my farmhouse get ice dams when the newer house down the road does not?
Older houses usually lose more heat through the roof, and that heat melts snow from below. Roofs with ells, valleys and low porch sections also trap more snow. A newer house with good insulation and a simple roof keeps its roof colder, so meltwater does not build up at the eaves the same way.
Should I clean my gutters before winter in Little Compton?
Yes, if trees reach your roof. Leaves left in the gutter freeze into a solid mass that blocks meltwater and helps an ice dam start. Homes out on open fields may collect less, but a fall check for blown debris and blocked downspouts is still worth it.
