Much of North Providence was built out in the decades after World War II, and its streets are lined with capes, ranches and raised ranches. A raised ranch has a lower level that sits partly below the ground, often with a family room or bedroom down there. When the gutter above overflows, water drops right beside those windows and walls. Homes on slopes get runoff from the yard above as well as from the roof. Downspouts that empty on the uphill side send water back toward the house. We place downspouts and extensions so water follows the grade away from the foundation.
Centredale, Lymansville and Allendale grew up along the Woonasquatucket River, and some homes there sit on lower ground. Low ground holds water longer, so getting roof water well away from the house matters more.
Ranches and raised ranches often have long, low-pitched roofs. When gutters are clogged in winter, meltwater backs up and freezes along the edge, then works under the shingles. We remove ice dams by hand, cutting drainage channels, and install heat cables where they return.
