The cheapest basement waterproofing there is.

Splash Blocks & Downspout Extensions

Your gutters collect thousands of gallons a year. Where the downspout puts that water decides whether your basement stays dry.

Reviewed by Josh Campbell, owner of Mr. Gutter · Updated October 2026

At a glance

Splash blocks and downspout extensions move roof water away from the foundation. A splash block spreads water at the base of the downspout; an extension carries it several feet farther out. Water should land well away from the house, on ground that slopes away, which keeps basements and foundations dry.

Why it matters

A downspout that ends right at the foundation pours all the water from that section of roof against your basement wall. Over time that means damp basements, settling, cracked walkways and washed-out beds.

How far should water land from the house?

At least several feet from the foundation, on ground that slopes away from the house. If water pools near the wall, extend the discharge or reroute the downspout.

Other fixes

  • Add a downspout to a long run that overflows.
  • Upsize to 3x4-inch downspouts.
  • Reroute a downspout away from walkways and driveways where water freezes.
  • Regrade soil so it slopes away from the foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a splash block or an extension?
If the ground already slopes away, a splash block may be enough. If water pools near the house or the basement gets damp, an extension that carries water farther out is better.
How long should a downspout extension be?
Long enough that water lands well away from the foundation, several feet or more, on ground that slopes away.
Can you reroute my downspouts?
Yes. We reroute and extend downspouts as part of our downspout services.
