We stop long Douglas winters from turning roof snow into ceiling leaks

Douglas is one of the higher, colder towns we serve. Much of it is forest, with Douglas State Forest along the Rhode Island line and houses scattered over wooded hills and down long driveways. Snow that would melt off a sunny roof near the coast can sit on a Douglas roof under tall pines for most of the winter. That long stay is what turns a few icicles into a thick dam at the eaves.

The dam forms the same way on every house. Heat from inside warms the roof deck, snow melts from underneath, and the water freezes again when it reaches the cold overhang. In Douglas the cycle just runs longer and the dams get bigger. When water backs up behind one, we remove it by hand, carefully cutting channels through the ice so the trapped water can drain into the gutters. We never pry the dam off, because that damages shingles and pulls gutters loose.

On homes around Wallum Lake, in East Douglas or anywhere a roof dams up winter after winter, heat cables are usually the next step. Cables along the eaves and through the gutters keep a channel open so meltwater can leave the roof. Pair them with a late-fall gutter cleaning and All Mesh Pro stainless mesh guards, which keep pine needles out of the gutters all winter. Call (508) 399-7600 for a free estimate. We respond the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Douglas homes

Higher, colder ground

Douglas sits on higher ground than the Blackstone River towns to its east and well above the coast. Colder nights and longer cold stretches mean snow stays on roofs longer and refreezes at the eaves more often.

Pine shade all winter

White pines surround many Douglas homes and keep their needles through the winter. Roofs under them may get little direct sun for months, so the snow never really leaves, and the dam at the eaves keeps growing.

Wind off Wallum Lake

Homes near Wallum Lake and other open ground catch wind that drifts snow onto the sheltered side of the roof. Drifts pile deepest along the eaves, which is exactly where ice dams form.

Gutters frozen solid with needles

Pine needles mat inside the gutter and freeze into a solid block once the cold sets in. A gutter full of ice cannot carry meltwater away, so the dam starts at the gutter and builds back up the roof.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Preparing a Douglas roof for winter

In Douglas, assume the snow will stay a while and plan for the meltwater. Get the gutters cleaned in late fall, once the oaks are bare, so no needles or leaves freeze inside them. Add roof and gutter heat cables along the eaves that iced up last winter, especially on the north side and under the pines. A stainless mesh guard like All Mesh Pro keeps needles out from fall to spring. Inside, attic insulation and air sealing slow the melting at its source. We do not do insulation, but it is the best long-term fix. A roof rake for the first few feet of snow helps between storms.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ice dams a real problem, or just icicles?
They can do real damage. Icicles are the warning sign. The trouble is the water pooling behind the ice, which works under shingles and into ceilings, walls and insulation. Long Douglas winters give that water more time to do it. If you see stains near the eaves or a thick ridge of ice, call (508) 399-7600.
Can you remove an ice dam without damaging my roof?
Yes. We work by hand and cut channels through the dam instead of breaking the whole thing off. The channels let the trapped water drain off the roof and into the gutters, which stops the leak while keeping the shingles and gutters intact.
Do heat cables work under heavy pine shade?
Yes, and shaded roofs are where they help most. Snow under pines melts slowly from below and refreezes at the edge. Heat cables along the eaves and inside the gutters and downspouts keep a path open so that water can drain, even when the rest of the roof stays covered.
Do you work near Douglas State Forest and Wallum Lake?
Yes. We remove ice dams and install heat cables across Douglas, including East Douglas, the town center and the wooded roads near the state forest and Wallum Lake. If your driveway is steep or icy, tell us when you call and we will plan the visit around it. Estimates are free.
