We stop Uxbridge ice dams from leaking into farmhouses and colonials

Uxbridge covers a lot of ground, and its winters show it. Out past the town center, houses sit beside open fields and on wooded hills, and wind blowing across the fields piles snow against one side of the roof. On an old farmhouse with an ell or an attached barn, that drift lands in the valley where two roofs meet. Snow there melts, runs to the cold edge, refreezes and builds an ice dam right where the roof is hardest to keep watertight.

Newer colonials off Route 146 and Route 16 have their own weak spots: big roofs, bonus rooms over the garage and dormers that break up the eaves. Wherever heat leaks into the roof, snow melts from below and the water freezes at the overhang. When that happens, we remove the dam by hand. We carefully cut channels through the ice so the backed-up water drains into the gutters, and we leave the shingles and gutters in one piece.

Getting to a house at the end of a long country road is part of the job. For homes that dam up every year, we install roof and gutter heat cables on the problem sections, clean gutters late in the fall and fit gutter guards so leaves and pine needles do not freeze into the gutter. We work in North Uxbridge, Ironstone, Wheelockville, Hecla and every road in between. Call (508) 399-7600 for a free estimate, answered the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Uxbridge homes

Wind across open fields

Uxbridge still has open farmland, and wind crossing those fields drifts snow onto the downwind side of nearby roofs. Deep drifts at the eaves melt slowly and refreeze, building bigger dams than the snow on the rest of the roof would.

Ells, barns and roof valleys

Farmhouses with ells and attached barns have valleys where rooflines meet. Snow slides into the valley, meltwater concentrates there, and the gutter below it takes the most ice. Valleys are where many Uxbridge ice dams start.

Older homes near the common

Older houses around the town center and in the mill villages often have little attic insulation and plenty of air leaks. Warm air reaches the roof deck all winter, keeping snow melting from below on even the coldest days.

Wooded hillsides

Many Uxbridge homes sit on wooded slopes, where oaks and white pines shade the roof for most of the winter day. Shaded snow lingers for weeks, so the freeze and thaw at the eaves repeats again and again.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Uxbridge farmhouse or colonial

Look first at the spots that dam up every year, which on most Uxbridge houses means the valleys, the north side and any roof that catches drifting snow. Roof and gutter heat cables on those sections keep a path open for meltwater. Gutters cleaned after the last oak leaves fall go into winter empty, and gutter guards keep them that way. For the long term, attic insulation and air sealing do the most to stop the melting. We are not insulation contractors, but on an older farmhouse it is worth having one take a look. Keep a roof rake handy for the first few feet of snow at the eaves, too.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove ice dams from an old farmhouse with an ell or attached barn?
Yes. Those roofs usually dam up in the valleys where two rooflines meet. We cut channels through the ice by hand so the water trapped in the valley can drain, without tearing at old shingles or gutters. Then we can talk about heat cables for that valley so it does not happen again.
Why does one side of my Uxbridge house get ice dams and not the other?
Often it is wind. Snow blows across open fields and drifts onto the downwind side of the roof, where it melts and refreezes at the eaves. Shade from trees on the north side does the same thing. Those sections are where heat cables make the most difference.
Do you remove ice dams in North Uxbridge and the other villages?
Yes. We remove ice dams anywhere in Uxbridge, including North Uxbridge, Ironstone, Wheelockville, Hecla and the town center, plus the rural roads out toward Douglas and the Rhode Island line. Call (508) 399-7600 and we will get back to you the same business day.
Should I use a roof rake?
It can help. Raking the first few feet of snow off the eaves after a storm takes away the snow that would melt and refreeze into a dam. Stay on the ground, keep the rake well away from power lines and leave any ice that has already formed to us, since pulling at it can damage shingles.
