Snow on a roof above a gutter in winter
Raynham, Massachusetts

We stop Raynham's ice dams from backing water into ceilings and walls

Raynham has a lot of ranch homes, and their long, low-slope roofs with wide overhangs are made for ice dams. Low slopes move water slowly. When snow melts on one of those roofs, the water creeps down to the cold eave and freezes before it reaches the gutter, and the next round of melt piles up behind it. Because the pitch is shallow, it does not take much ice before water reaches under the shingles.

Newer subdivisions add a different problem: colonials with heated bonus rooms over the garage. The ceiling of those rooms follows the roof slope with little space for insulation, so heat goes straight into the roof deck and melts snow on that section while the rest stays frozen. The dam forms at the garage eave. When water starts coming through, we cut channels through the ice by hand to let it drain, which protects your shingles and gutters.

Raynham's level, open neighborhoods also let wind pile drifted snow on one side of a roof. We install heat cables on the eaves that dam up, clean gutters in late fall and add Proflow or All Mesh Pro guards so meltwater has a clear path. We also work on commercial buildings along Route 44 and Route 138. Send a photo or call (508) 399-7600 for a free estimate.

Why ice dams form on Raynham homes

Low-slope ranch roofs

Raynham's ranch homes have shallow roofs and long overhangs. Meltwater moves slowly across them and freezes at the cold eave, and on a low pitch, even a small dam can push water back under the shingles.

Bonus rooms over garages

Many newer Raynham colonials have a finished room above the garage with a sloped ceiling. Heat from that room warms the roof right above it, melting snow that refreezes along the garage eave, a very common spot for leaks.

Drifting snow on open lots

Flat, open neighborhoods let the wind push snow across roofs and pile it on the downwind side. A deep drift near the eaves holds more water to melt and refreeze, so dams on that side grow faster.

Oaks and pines along the wetlands

Neighborhoods that back onto Raynham's wetlands and woods have roofs shaded by oaks and pines. Shade slows melting on the roof surface and leaves gutters stuffed with late leaves, two things that help an ice dam form.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Cutting down on ice dams at Raynham homes

Start with the spots that dam every year. On a ranch, that is usually the long front or back eave. On a newer colonial, it is often the roof over the garage bonus room. Roof and gutter heat cables keep a channel open there all winter. Clean gutters before the snow, and gutter guards help keep them clear. Inside the house, check that bathroom fans vent outdoors and not into the attic, and look at sealing the attic hatch and adding insulation. We do not do that inside work, but it reduces the heat that starts the problem.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the roof over my garage get ice dams?
If there is a finished room above the garage, that room's warmth reaches the roof deck through the sloped ceiling and melts the snow above it. That water then freezes again at the colder garage eave. Heat cables along that eave and better insulation in the room's ceiling are the usual fixes.
Are ranch houses in Raynham more likely to get ice dams?
Low-slope roofs are more prone to them, yes. Water moves slowly across a shallow pitch, so it freezes at the eave before draining, and it takes less ice to back it up under the shingles. Keeping gutters clean and adding heat cables along the eaves goes a long way.
Do you remove ice dams on commercial buildings in Raynham?
Yes. We clear ice dams and install heat cables on commercial buildings and condominiums as well as homes. We cut channels through the ice by hand so water drains without damaging the roof edge or gutters. For a free estimate, give us a call at (508) 399-7600.
