Old houses. Big roofs. Ice handled with care.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Easton, MA

Easton's older homes and large, tree-shaded lots are a natural setup for ice dams, and on a historic house the water they push inside can ruin plaster and woodwork that is hard to replace.

We keep ice dams from damaging Easton's historic homes and new ones alike

North Easton has many houses from the era when the Ames family ran the shovel works, along with the stone landmarks H.H. Richardson designed for the town. Those older homes were built before attic insulation was standard, and many still lose a lot of heat through the top floor. That heat melts snow from below, and the water freezes again at the cold overhang. On a house with plaster walls and original trim, a leak from an ice dam is not a quick fix.

Away from the village, Easton turns to woods and bigger house lots, especially through South Easton and around Borderland State Park. Many newer colonials there have big roofs with valleys and dormers, and tall oaks and pines keep those roofs shaded through the winter. When an ice dam starts pushing water inside, we cut channels through the ice by hand so it can drain. We work carefully around older shingles and gutters, including copper and half-round systems on historic homes.

For prevention, we look at why your roof dams up. Heat cables go along the eaves and in the gutters where the ice keeps coming back. A cleaning after the last leaves fall empties the gutters, and gutter guards keep them that way. Call (508) 399-7600 or send us a photo of the ice through the form. The estimate is free, and the reply comes the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Easton homes

Historic homes with little insulation

Many older homes in North Easton have attics and top floors that were never insulated to modern standards. Heat rising through the house warms the roof deck, melts snow from below and sets up the freeze at the eaves that builds a dam.

Large, shaded wooded lots

Much of Easton is wooded, and big lots near Borderland State Park and throughout South Easton put many roofs under oaks and pines. Shaded snow lingers, and lingering snow keeps feeding the ice at the gutter line.

Valleys on newer colonials

Newer Easton colonials often combine several roof planes, dormers and valleys. A valley gathers meltwater into a narrow stream that reaches the gutter at one spot, and that spot freezes first and backs water up the valley.

Copper and older gutters worth protecting

Some historic Easton homes have copper or half-round gutters that are costly to replace. Pounding at ice in them can dent or split them, and the weight of a frozen gutter strains old hangers and fascia. Careful removal by hand matters here.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Protecting Easton homes from next winter's ice dams

On a historic North Easton house, the best long-term step is usually attic work: air sealing and insulation done by a contractor who knows older homes. That is not our trade, but it is worth doing. What we handle is the roof edge. Roof and gutter heat cables keep meltwater moving along the eaves that dam every year, a late-fall gutter cleaning clears out the oak leaves, and gutter guards keep pine needles from refilling the gutters before snow. On big, shaded roofs, a roof rake for the first few feet of snow at the eaves also helps.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove ice dams from a historic home in North Easton?
Yes. We cut channels through the ice by hand so trapped water drains, without chipping or prying at the shingles. That careful approach matters on older homes, where roofs, gutters and trim are harder to replace. Reach us at (508) 399-7600 and we will get back to you the same business day.
Why do ice dams form on my newer Easton colonial?
Even new homes get them when heat reaches the roof. Recessed lights, attic hatches and bathroom fans are common leak points, and valleys concentrate meltwater at a single spot on the gutter. Shade from tall trees keeps snow around longer. Heat cables in the problem spots and clean gutters handle most of it.
Is a late-fall gutter cleaning worth it on a wooded Easton lot?
Yes, after the oaks finish dropping. On a wooded Easton lot, gutters cleaned in early fall are often full again by the first snow. Leaves frozen in the trough leave meltwater nowhere to go. A late cleaning and a set of gutter guards keep the gutters clear through the season.
Do you work in South Easton too?
Yes. We remove ice dams and install heat cables in all of Easton, including North Easton, South Easton and the wooded roads near Borderland State Park. Send a photo through the form on this page or call (508) 399-7600 for a free estimate.
