Deep shade. Slow melt. Water at the eaves.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Sharon, MA

On Sharon's shaded, wooded lots the sun barely reaches some roofs in winter, so snow stays put, ice builds at the eaves, and the water behind it finds its way inside.

We stop Sharon's shaded roofs from holding ice that leaks into your home

Sharon's tree cover is beautiful in summer and hard on roofs in winter. Tall pines and oaks keep many houses in shade for most of the day, and on the north side of a roof the snow may not see sun at all. Snow that sits that long has plenty of time to melt from underneath, run down to the eaves and freeze again. The ridge of ice grows, the water behind it rises, and eventually it slips under the shingles and into a wall or ceiling.

Hills add to it. Homes on the slopes around Moose Hill and elsewhere in town may have one side of the roof turned away from the sun, and houses tucked into low spots stay colder than the street. Many Sharon homes also have skylights, cathedral ceilings and complicated rooflines that let heat reach the roof in patches. When a dam starts to leak, we come out and cut channels through the ice by hand, letting the trapped water drain without harming the shingles or gutters.

Prevention here starts with the gutters. Pine needles left in a gutter in fall freeze into a solid block, so a late cleaning and a fine mesh guard like All Mesh Pro make a real difference. On shaded eaves that dam every year, we install roof and gutter heat cables. Why ice dams form on Sharon homes

Tree shade on the roof

Pines and oaks shade a large share of Sharon roofs. In shade, snow does not melt off from the top. It only melts from below, slowly, which feeds the dam at the eaves for weeks after a storm.

North-facing slopes and low spots

Sharon's terrain means some homes sit on north-facing slopes or down in hollows where cold air settles. Those roofs stay colder and hold their snow longer than houses on open, sunny lots just down the road.

Skylights and cathedral ceilings

Contemporary homes and additions in Sharon often have skylights, vaulted ceilings and roofs that change direction. Those details leave little room for insulation, so warm spots on the roof melt snow that refreezes below them.

Needles frozen in the gutters

Pine needles pack tightly and hold water. A gutter that goes into winter with needles in it freezes into a solid trough of ice, so meltwater from the roof backs up against the dam instead of draining.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Giving meltwater a way off Sharon's shaded roofs

Shade is not going anywhere, so the goal is to give meltwater a way off the roof. Have the gutters cleaned after the last leaves and needles come down, and consider All Mesh Pro stainless mesh or Proflow aluminum guards so the trough stays open. Heat cables on the shaded eaves and in the gutters keep a channel running through cold stretches. Keeping a roof rake handy to pull the first few feet of snow off the eaves helps too. Over the long term, sealing air leaks around skylights and recessed lights and adding attic insulation reduces melting, which is work for an insulation contractor rather than us.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does one side of my Sharon roof get ice dams and not the other?
Usually it is the shaded side. The sunny side melts off from the top and clears, while the shaded side keeps its snow, melts slowly from below and refreezes at the eaves. Trees and north-facing slopes make that worse. Heat cables on the shaded eave are often the simplest fix.
Will removing the ice dam hurt my Sharon roof?
Yes. We cut channels through the ice by hand so trapped water can drain, rather than trying to break the whole dam off. That protects the shingles and gutters underneath. If water is already coming in, call (508) 399-7600 and we will respond the same business day.
Do gutter guards help with ice dams in Sharon?
They help by keeping pine needles and leaves out, so gutters are empty when winter comes and meltwater can drain instead of freezing in a clogged trough. Guards do not stop ice dams by themselves, so for eaves that dam every year we pair them with heat cables.
Do you remove ice dams near Lake Massapoag?
Yes. We work all over Sharon, including the homes around Lake Massapoag, Sharon Heights, Sharon Center and the wooded neighborhoods near Moose Hill. Send a photo of the ice through our form or call (508) 399-7600 for a free estimate.
