River wind. Old gutters. Heavy ice.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Somerset, MA

On a Somerset home with aging gutters, an ice dam does double damage: water backs up under the shingles while the weight of the ice drags the gutter off the fascia. We cut the dam open by hand to take the pressure off.

Snow on a roof above a gutter in winter
Somerset, Massachusetts

We take the weight and the water out of Somerset ice dams

In Somerset, a lot of ice dam calls come with a second problem attached: the gutter itself. Many homes in town still wear older gutters held on with spikes that have been loosening for years. Pack that gutter with frozen slush and a foot of ice along the edge, and the weight pulls it forward and away from the fascia. Now the meltwater is going behind the gutter as well as under the shingles.

The river plays a part. Somerset's east side faces the Taunton River, with open water between it and Fall River, and winter storms come across that water with plenty of wind. Snow gets scoured off one side of the roof and dumped in a deep drift on the other, right over one eave. Add the capes and split-levels found all over town, with rooms close under the roof and low sections where levels meet, and ice has plenty of places to settle in.

We remove ice dams by hand. We carefully cut channels through the ice so the trapped water drains through the gutter and off the roof, relieving the pressure without yanking on an already loose gutter. If a gutter or fascia board has been damaged, we can repair it, or replace the run with seamless gutters on hidden hangers once the weather breaks. Reach us at (508) 399-7600 for a free estimate.

Why ice dams form on Somerset homes

Aging gutters and loose spikes

Older spike-and-ferrule gutters loosen over time. Under a load of ice they sag, pull away and tilt the wrong way, which holds even more water at the roof edge and lets meltwater run behind the gutter onto the fascia.

Drifts off the Taunton River

Storms blowing across the river strip snow from the windward side of the roof and pile it on the lee side. That deep drift over one eave melts slowly from below and feeds an ice dam for weeks.

Capes and split-levels

Somerset's capes have bedrooms tucked under the roof, and split-levels have a lower roof below an upper wall. Both put warm rooms or snow piles right where the eave is coldest, which is how ice dams start.

Snow, rain, then a hard freeze

Being close to the water, Somerset often gets storms that change from snow to rain before temperatures drop. Slush in the gutters freezes solid, so the next thaw has nowhere to drain.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Somerset roof next winter

If your gutters are already sagging or loose, fix that first; a gutter pitched the wrong way is half an ice dam before the snow even falls. We can repair it or replace it with seamless aluminum on hidden hangers, which hold up better under ice. Have the gutters cleaned after the maples and oaks drop so they start winter empty, and consider roof and gutter heat cables on the eave that catches the drift every year. Inside, an insulation contractor can add insulation and seal air leaks over top-floor rooms, which is the long-term cure. A roof rake helps after big storms.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an ice dam pull my gutters off?
Yes, especially older gutters hung with spikes. Ice is heavy, and a gutter packed with it can sag, bend or tear away from the fascia, taking the fascia board with it in bad cases. Cutting channels through the ice relieves the water, and if the gutter is damaged we can repair it or install new seamless gutters on hidden hangers.
Why is the snow always deeper on one side of my Somerset roof?
Wind. Storms crossing the Taunton River blow snow off the windward slope and drop it on the sheltered side. That deeper snow takes longer to melt and keeps feeding meltwater to the same eave, which is why ice dams often show up on the same side of the house every winter. A heat cable there helps.
Do you remove ice dams in Somerset Village and Pottersville?
Yes. We remove ice dams by hand in Somerset Village, Pottersville, the neighborhoods near Brayton Point and the rest of Somerset. Call (508) 399-7600 or send a photo through the estimate form. We answer the same business day, and there is no charge for the estimate.
Should I try to chip the ice off myself?
We'd advise against it. Chopping at an ice dam with a hammer or shovel tends to crack shingles, dent gutters and put you on a slippery ladder. Pull the first few feet of snow off with a roof rake from the ground if you can, put a bucket under any drips, and let us cut channels through the ice by hand.
