We stop Wrentham ice dams from damaging old farmhouses and new colonials alike

Wrentham's older farmhouses around the town center and in Sheldonville were built long before anyone insulated attics, and many still have very little between the top floor and the roof. All winter, warm air drifts up into the roof deck. The snow melts from below and runs down to the cold overhang, where it freezes. The ridge of ice grows with each cold night, and the water behind it starts looking for a way in.

The bigger, newer homes on Wrentham's wooded roads have a different setup. Large roofs with several valleys collect a lot of snow, and every valley funnels meltwater toward one corner of the eaves. When a dam forms there, the water backs up fast. Either way, our approach is the same. We remove ice dams by hand, carefully cutting channels through the ice so the trapped water drains into the gutters, and we treat old roofing and gutters with the care they need.

For roofs that ice up winter after winter, we install roof and gutter heat cables on the problem sections. We clean gutters late in the fall, once the oaks and maples are bare, and fit gutter guards on lots near Lake Pearl, Lake Archer and other wooded spots. We cover the town center, West Wrentham and everywhere in between. Call (508) 399-7600 for a free estimate, and we will respond the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Wrentham homes

Farmhouses with little insulation

Older Wrentham farmhouses often have shallow attics and little insulation over the top floor. Heat escapes into the roof all winter, which keeps snow melting from below and feeding the ice at the eaves.

Big roofs with several valleys

Large colonials on Wrentham's bigger lots often have complex rooflines with valleys and dormers. Valleys concentrate meltwater into one spot at the edge of the roof, and that spot is where the thickest ice forms.

Ells and lower additions

Many older homes have ells or additions with their own lower roofs. Snow and ice from the main roof drop onto them, and a lower roof that collects that load is an easy place for water to back up.

Inland cold on open lots

Wrentham is inland in Norfolk County, with real snow and long cold stretches. Larger, open lots let wind drift snow onto the downwind side of the roof, adding extra snow along the eaves where dams form.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Wrentham roof

Know where your roof dams up, because on a big Wrentham house it is rarely everywhere. It is usually at the valleys, over an ell or along a north-facing eave. Heat cables on those sections keep a channel open for meltwater. A gutter cleaning after the last oak leaves come down, plus gutter guards, keeps the gutters ready to carry water. On older farmhouses, adding attic insulation and sealing air leaks is the best long-term fix. We do not do insulation ourselves, but it is worth having a contractor look before next winter.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove an ice dam from an older farmhouse without damaging it?
Yes. We work by hand and cut channels through the ice so the trapped water can drain, rather than forcing the whole dam off the roof. That protects older shingles, trim and gutters. Once the water is moving, the leak usually slows, and the remaining ice melts away on its own.
Why does my Wrentham house only get ice dams in certain spots?
Because ice dams form where heat and water collect. On most Wrentham homes that means roof valleys, the eaves over a warm room or a poorly insulated ell, and north-facing eaves that stay shaded. Those are the spots where heat cables make the most difference.
Do you install heat cables in Wrentham?
Yes. We install roof and gutter heat cables on Wrentham homes that dam up every winter. Cables run along the eaves and inside the gutters and downspouts so meltwater has a path off the roof. We place them where your dams actually form, not across the whole roof by default.
Can I get help with an ice dam in Sheldonville or West Wrentham?
Yes. We remove ice dams across Wrentham, including Sheldonville, West Wrentham, the town center and the homes around Lake Pearl and Lake Archer. Call (508) 399-7600 or send a photo of the ice, and we will respond the same business day with a free estimate.
