We stop Bellingham ice dams from leaking into ceilings and walls

Many Bellingham homes are post-war capes, and the cape is the classic ice dam house. The upstairs bedrooms sit right under the roof, with short knee walls and very little attic space between the heated rooms and the shingles. Heat leaks up, warms the roof deck and melts the snow from underneath. The water runs down to the cold overhang, freezes and builds a ridge of ice. The next round of meltwater pools behind that ridge and finds its way under the shingles.

Removing the dam the right way matters. We work by hand, carefully cutting channels through the ice so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters. We do not try to tear the whole dam off, because that takes shingles and gutters with it. Once the water is moving, the leak usually slows right away, and the rest of the ice can melt off on its own without more damage to the roof edge.

After that, the goal is a roof that does not dam up again. On Bellingham capes and ranches that ice up every winter, we install roof and gutter heat cables that keep a path open for meltwater. We clean gutters in the fall so they are empty when the snow comes, and gutter guards keep them that way. Call (508) 399-7600 or send a photo of the ice. We respond the same business day and the estimate is free.

Why ice dams form on Bellingham homes

Capes with knee walls

Bellingham has many post-war capes with finished second floors tucked under the roof. The knee walls and sloped ceilings leave little room for insulation or airflow, so heat reaches the roof deck directly. That is the setup that melts snow from below and refreezes it at the eaves.

Colder nights than the coast

Bellingham sits well north of Narragansett Bay, on the Rhode Island line near Woonsocket. Winter nights here run colder than along the shore, so snow that melts in the afternoon reliably refreezes along the overhang after dark, and dams grow bigger through a cold stretch.

Low ranch roofs

Ranches near the center of town have low-slope roofs that hold snow longer than steep ones. Meltwater moves slowly on a shallow pitch, which gives it more time to freeze at the edge and back up under the shingles.

Gutters still full of leaves

Maples and oaks drop late, and plenty of Bellingham gutters go into winter half full. Wet leaves freeze into a solid block in the gutter, which gives an ice dam a head start right at the roof edge and adds weight to the hangers.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Bellingham roof next winter

Start in the fall. Have the gutters cleaned after the oaks finish dropping, so there is nothing in them to freeze. If your house dams up every year, roof and gutter heat cables along the eaves and in the gutters keep a channel open for meltwater, and gutter guards keep leaves from refilling the gutters before the first snow. Inside the house, better attic insulation and air sealing above the second floor do the most to stop the melting in the first place. That is work for an insulation contractor, not a service we offer, but on a Bellingham cape it is worth the call.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you remove ice dams in Bellingham?
By hand. We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and through the gutters. That stops the backup without prying the whole dam loose, which protects your shingles and gutters. We work in every part of town, from North Bellingham and Caryville to South Bellingham.
Why does my cape get ice dams when my neighbor's ranch does not?
Usually because of your second floor. On a cape, heated rooms sit right under the roof with little insulation above them, so the roof warms and melts snow from below. A ranch has a full attic that stays cold. Heat cables along your eaves help, and better attic insulation helps most.
Do heat cables work on Bellingham homes?
Yes, on the right roof. Heat cables run in a zigzag along the eaves and inside the gutters and downspouts, keeping a path open so meltwater can drain instead of refreezing. They work best on roofs that dam up in the same spots every winter, which describes a lot of capes and ranches in town.
How do I get help with an ice dam in Bellingham?
Call (508) 399-7600 or send the form with a photo of the ice and any leaks you see inside. We respond the same business day, and the estimate is free. Until we get there, keep the area under any drip dry and clear of furniture.
