Open island. Drifting snow. Help by arrangement.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention on Block Island, RI

Snow rarely lasts long on Block Island, but when it drifts against a roof and freezes at the edge, meltwater can work under the shingles of a house that may sit empty until spring.

We help Block Island homeowners keep drifted snow and ice from leaking into their houses

Winter on Block Island is different from winter on the mainland. The ocean around the island tends to keep temperatures milder, and snow often turns to rain or melts within a few days. That does not rule out ice dams. With almost no tall trees to break the wind, snow blows across open lots and piles up on the sheltered side of a roof, against chimneys and in valleys. When that drift melts and the water reaches a cold roof edge, it freezes into a dam.

Many homes in New Shoreham are seasonal, from gray-shingled cottages near Old Harbor and New Harbor to houses on open land along Corn Neck. Some sit closed all winter with the heat turned low. Others have become year-round homes over time, sometimes without much added attic insulation. Either way, a dam can sit at the eaves and leak into a ceiling or wall for weeks before anyone sees the stain, so the first sign is often found in spring.

Because getting to the island takes planning, we look at Block Island requests one at a time and cannot promise a date until we have talked with you. When we do take an ice dam job, we remove the ice by hand, carefully cutting channels so the trapped water can drain without harming the shingles or gutters. For most island owners, prevention done before winter is the better plan. Call (401) 274-3030 or send photos through the form to talk it over.

Why ice dams form on New Shoreham (Block Island) homes

Wind with nothing to stop it

Much of Block Island is open shrubland and pasture with few tall trees. Winter wind scours snow off one side of a roof and drops it in deep drifts on the other, often around chimneys, dormers and valleys, where it melts slowly and refreezes.

Rain on snow and quick refreezes

Island storms often mix snow, sleet and rain. Wet snow soaks up rain, then freezes at the cold eaves when the temperature drops after the storm. Even a short cold spell can turn that slush into a solid ridge of ice.

Homes closed for the winter

A house shut for the season, with the heat set low, can still warm the attic enough to melt snow on the roof. With no one there, icicles and ceiling stains go unnoticed, and a small leak has months to soak insulation and framing.

Salt-worn gutters and downspouts

Salt air is hard on old steel fasteners and patched gutter seams. A gutter that already sags, or a downspout that is partly blocked, holds meltwater at the roof edge, where it freezes and gives an ice dam a place to start.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Getting a Block Island house ready before winter

For most island homes, prevention is the practical answer, and the best time is fall, before you close up the house. Clean gutters and clear downspouts give meltwater a way off the roof. Roof and gutter heat cables can keep a drainage path open on eaves that have iced up before, as long as the house keeps power through the winter. Gutter guards matter less here, with so few trees, but they can help where wind blows debris into the gutters. Two things we do not sell but suggest: ask an insulation contractor about attic insulation and air sealing, and arrange for someone on the island to check the roof edge after big storms.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove ice dams on Block Island?
Sometimes. Island work depends on travel and on the job itself, so we look at each request separately and cannot promise timing in advance. Please call (401) 274-3030 or send photos through the form. We will tell you honestly whether we can help and what it would involve before you count on anything.
How do you take off an ice dam without damaging the roof?
We work by hand. Instead of breaking the whole dam loose, we carefully cut channels through the ice so the trapped water can drain off the roof and out through the gutters. That relieves the backed-up water without pounding on the shingles or bending the gutters.
Do heat cables make sense on a seasonal Block Island home?
They can, on eaves and gutters that ice up every year, as long as the power stays on while the house is closed. Cables keep a channel open so meltwater drains instead of refreezing. Pair them with clean gutters in the fall, since a gutter full of debris still freezes solid.
What should I check when I open my island house in spring?
Look for water stains on ceilings and walls near the eaves, damp or flattened attic insulation, and gutters pulling away from the fascia. Those are common signs that an ice dam leaked over the winter. Send photos through the form and we can tell you what we see and what it might take to fix.
