Sea wind. Wet snow. Empty houses in January.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Narragansett, RI

Narragansett doesn't hold snow for long, but one wet storm and a cold night can leave an ice dam on the roof, and in a house that sits empty all winter, nobody sees the water coming in. We open the dam by hand so it drains.

We stop Narragansett ice dams from leaking into houses nobody is watching

Narragansett winters are milder than inland Rhode Island. The ocean on two sides keeps temperatures up, and many storms that bring snow to the western towns bring rain or a wintry mix to Bonnet Shores, the Pier and Point Judith. That does not make the town safe from ice dams. It changes how they form. Here, the danger is a storm that drops wet snow, turns to rain, and then freezes hard as the wind swings around.

The other problem is who is home. Narragansett has many seasonal houses and summer rentals that sit closed from fall to spring. An ice dam on an empty house can push water under the shingles for days, staining ceilings and soaking insulation before anyone walks in. The older summer houses near the Pier and along Ocean Road, with steep roofs, dormers and porches, give that ice more corners to grab.

Removal is careful handwork. We cut channels through the ice so the water trapped behind it can drain into the gutters and away from the house, leaving the shingles and gutters as we found them. Owners who are out of town can have a neighbor or caretaker send photos through the form. We answer the same business day at (401) 274-3030, quote from photos when we can, and let you know the day before we come.

Why ice dams form on Narragansett homes

Wet snow that turns to rain

A typical coastal storm here starts as heavy snow and changes to rain. The roof ends up carrying waterlogged slush, and when cold air rushes in behind the storm, it hardens into a dense band of ice along the gutters.

Houses closed for the winter

Seasonal homes and rentals are often closed from fall until spring, sometimes with the heat turned low but still on. That low heat can still melt roof snow, and with nobody home, a dam can leak for a long time before anyone notices.

Steep summer houses near the Pier

Older summer houses near Narragansett Pier have steep roofs, dormers and porch roofs tied into the main house. Snow slides off the steep slopes and piles up on the porch roofs and in the corners, where the meltwater freezes.

Wind off open water

With water to the east and south, winter wind hits Narragansett homes hard. It scours snow from the windward side of a roof and packs it deep on the lee side, where the drift holds water against the eave.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Protecting an empty Narragansett house from next winter's ice

For a house that sits empty, prevention has to work without you. Have the gutters cleaned in late fall, after the leaves drop and before you close up, so wet snow has somewhere to drain. Roof and gutter heat cables on the eaves and porch roofs that ice up keep a channel open all winter. Gutter guards, Proflow aluminum or All Mesh Pro stainless mesh, keep windblown leaves out of the gutters while nobody is around. If you plan to leave the heat on, have an insulation contractor check attic insulation and air sealing. We do not do that work, but it keeps that heat out of the roof.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Narragansett doesn't get much snow. Why did I get an ice dam?
It only takes one storm. Wet snow that turns to rain, followed by a hard freeze, can build a solid ridge of ice at the eave in a single night. Add a warm attic or a clogged gutter, and the meltwater backs up under the shingles. Coastal homes get fewer ice dams than inland ones, not none.
Can you deal with an ice dam on my summer house while I'm away?
Yes. Have a neighbor or caretaker send photos of the roof edge through the form, or call (401) 274-3030 yourself. Photos usually let us quote without anyone meeting us there, you hear back the same business day, and we let you know the day before we come. The removal is done from outside, by hand.
Will gutter guards make ice dams worse on a beach house?
No. Ice dams start on the roof, not in the gutter. Guards keep leaves and windblown debris from packing the gutter, so meltwater can drain instead of freezing in a clogged trough. On a seasonal home where nobody is around to clean in late fall, that open gutter helps.
Which spots on a Narragansett house should get heat cables?
The ones that ice up every winter. On older houses near the Pier, that is often the porch roofs, the dormer corners and the lee side of the main roof. We run cable along those eaves and inside the gutters below so water has a warm path off the roof. Photos of last winter's icicles help us plan it.
