Highest ground. Old farmhouses. Snow that stays.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Foster, RI

Foster holds the highest ground in Rhode Island, and its winters show it. Snow sits on farmhouse roofs long after it has melted near the coast, and the ice dams that build at the eaves can push water into old walls and sills.

At a glance

Foster, RI farmhouses and hilltop homes get the same careful approach from Mr. Gutter: ice dams opened by hand, with channels cut so trapped meltwater can drain. For prevention we put up roof and gutter heat cables, clean gutters ahead of winter and fit gutter guards. Estimates cost nothing, and the company has been in the same family since 1985.

We stop Foster ice dams from rotting farmhouse sills and soaking old walls

With Jerimoth Hill inside its borders, Foster sits higher than anywhere else in the state, and elevation changes winter. Storms that bring rain to Providence can drop snow here, and cold nights keep it frozen on roofs for longer stretches. That gives ice dams time. Each sunny afternoon melts a little snow, each night freezes the runoff at the eave, and the ridge of ice slowly gets taller.

Foster's houses add their own weak points. Many are older farmhouses that grew over the years, with an ell, a kitchen wing or an attached shed joined to the main house. Wherever two roofs meet, snow piles up and meltwater collects. Old farmhouses also tend to have little attic insulation, and if a wood stove runs all day, the roof above it stays warm. When water gets past the ice, it runs into walls, sills and old timber framing.

Every ice dam we take on is opened by hand. We cut channels through the ice carefully so the trapped water can drain off the roof and out of the gutters, without harming the shingles or the gutter. Since many Foster homes are a long drive down quiet roads, start with a photo: call (401) 274-3030 or send one through our form. There is no charge for the estimate, and we answer the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Foster homes

Highest elevation in the state

Foster's higher ground means colder nights and snow that lasts longer on roofs. More days with snow overhead mean more cycles of melting and refreezing at the eave, which is how small ice ridges become big ones.

Farmhouse ells and additions

Where a kitchen ell, wing or attached shed meets the main house, two roofs come together in a valley or a step. Snow drifts into that corner, melts slowly and refreezes in the one spot where water cannot drain.

Wind across open fields

Foster still has farm fields beside many homes. Wind blowing across that open ground drifts snow deep on the sheltered side of the roof, and the heavy drift feeds meltwater to the gutter long after the storm has passed.

Wood stoves and warm chimneys

Plenty of rural homes burn wood for heat. A stove running day and night warms the attic and the roof around the chimney, melting snow from below and sending water toward eaves that are still well below freezing.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Preparing a Foster roof for a long winter

Because snow stays longer up here, prevention pays off more. Clean the gutters in late fall so the oak leaves and pine needles are out before they freeze. For the corner where an ell meets the main house, or the eave above a wood stove, roof and gutter heat cables keep a channel open through the worst of it. Gutter guards, Proflow aluminum or All Mesh Pro stainless mesh, cut down the cleanings on a wooded lot. The long-term fix for an old farmhouse is better attic insulation and air sealing; that is a call for an insulation contractor, since our work stays at the roof edge and gutters.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Maureen R.Customer review

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Foster farmhouse get ice where the ell meets the main house?
That joint is where two roof planes meet, so snow drifts into the corner and meltwater from both roofs collects in one spot. If that water cannot drain, it freezes into a dam and backs up under the shingles or flashing. A heat cable through that valley and gutter often solves it.
Is it safe to remove an ice dam myself?
We do not recommend climbing onto an icy roof. Falls are a real risk, and it is easy to damage shingles and gutters. A roof rake used from the ground to pull snow off the bottom few feet of the roof is safe and helpful. For ice that is already holding water, call us and we will cut channels through it by hand.
How far out in Foster do you go?
All of it. We work in Foster Center, Moosup Valley, Hopkins Mills, Clayville and on every back road between. Since some homes are a long way from the main routes, a photo of the ice is a good first step: send it to us or call (401) 274-3030, and we get back to you the same business day.
Do heat cables work on an older farmhouse roof?
Yes. Heat cables are installed along the eaves and into the gutters and downspouts, so they work on old and new roofs alike. On Foster farmhouses, we usually focus on the valleys and the eaves above warm rooms, where ice forms year after year, rather than covering every foot of roof.
