Icicles hanging from a roof edge in winter
Coventry, Rhode Island

We drain the water behind Coventry ice dams before it reaches your ceilings

Coventry stretches a long way from east to west, and winter changes as you go. In Anthony, Washington and Quidnick, the old mill villages near West Warwick, snow tends to come and go. Drive out past Coventry Centre toward Greene and Hopkins Hollow, and the land climbs. Those western roads run colder, and snow can sit on a roof there for days after the eastern villages have melted out. That lingering snow is what feeds an ice dam.

Here is how it happens. Heat from the house warms the upper roof, and the snow on it starts to melt. The water runs down to the overhang, which sits outside the warm walls and stays cold, so it freezes again into a ridge of ice. More melt pools behind that ridge with nowhere to go and works its way up under the shingles. Heavy icicles along the gutters and a thick ice shelf at the roof edge are the warning signs.

Our fix is done by hand. We carefully cut channels through the ice so the trapped water has a path off the roof and into the gutters, which protects the shingles and the gutters themselves. Once the water is moving again, we can talk about keeping the dam from coming back with roof and gutter heat cables, a late-fall gutter cleaning and gutter guards. Call (401) 274-3030 and we answer the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Coventry homes

Higher, colder ground out west

Western Coventry, out toward Greene, Hopkins Hollow and the Foster line, sits higher and farther from the bay than the mill villages. Snow lingers on roofs there, and every sunny afternoon followed by a hard freeze adds another layer of ice at the eaves.

Lake cottages made year-round

Many homes around Johnson's Pond and Tiogue Lake started as summer camps. Insulation was added later, if at all, and low-slope additions and enclosed porches meet the main roof at odd angles. Warm air leaking into those spots melts snow unevenly and starts dams.

Older mill-village houses

Homes in Anthony, Washington and Quidnick were built long before modern insulation. Heat escapes through the attic floor and warms the roof deck, so snow melts from below even on cold days and refreezes the moment it reaches the overhang.

Shade from tall trees

Oaks and white pines on wooded Coventry lots keep parts of a roof in shade all winter. Snow there stays frozen long after the open side has cleared, and the gutters under those shaded eaves are usually the first to fill with ice.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Coventry roof next winter

Start with the gutters. A Coventry gutter still packed with oak leaves in December holds water that freezes solid, so book a cleaning after the leaves are down. On eaves that dam every year, especially in the colder west end and on lake cottages, we can install roof and gutter heat cables to keep a drainage path open. Gutter guards from Proflow or All Mesh Pro keep leaves from building back up. The bigger fix is usually inside: attic insulation, air sealing and ventilation. We do not do that work, but an insulation contractor can, and a roof rake for the first few feet of snow helps between storms.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you remove ice dams on lake cottages around Tiogue Lake and Johnson's Pond?
Yes. Converted cottages are prone to ice dams, because additions, enclosed porches and low-slope sections trap meltwater where they meet the main roof. We cut channels through the ice by hand so the water drains, then look at whether a heat cable on those trouble spots makes sense for next winter.
Why does my house in western Coventry get ice dams when my friend's in Anthony doesn't?
Mostly elevation and shade. The west end sits higher and colder, so snow stays on the roof longer and goes through more days of melting and refreezing. Add tall trees, an older attic or a complicated roofline, and the odds go up. Two houses a few miles apart can have very different winters.
Will heat cables work on my Coventry cape?
They can help. Capes often have knee walls and very little attic space, so heat reaches the roof deck and melts snow from below. A heat cable along the eave and in the gutter keeps a channel open for that water. Cables manage the symptom; attic insulation and air sealing, which we don't do, address the cause.
How do I get help with an ice dam in Coventry?
Call (401) 274-3030 or send the form with a photo of the roof edge and any icicles or ceiling stains. We answer the same business day and can often quote from the photo. Estimates are free, and we let you know the day before we come.
