Eastern Johnston, around Thornton, Graniteville and Hughesdale, has older homes and post-war capes on smaller lots close to Providence and Cranston. Call (401) 274-3030Homes in the western part of town are often surrounded by oaks, maples and white pines. Gutters there fill with leaves in fall and needles all year. Two cleanings a year is the minimum, and gutter guards save a lot of ladder work.
Western Johnston is hilly, and houses on slopes collect runoff from the yard above as well as from the roof. Downspouts need to empty on the downhill side, or the water circles right back to the foundation.
