Higher hills. Deep shade. Snow that lingers.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Johnston, RI

In western Johnston, snow can sit on shaded roofs well after it has melted closer to Providence. The longer it stays, the bigger the ice at your eaves gets and the more likely it is to leak inside.

We stop Johnston's long-lasting roof snow from turning into ice dam leaks

Johnston climbs as you head west from Providence, and winter changes with it. The wooded hills toward Scituate and the Snake Den area tend to hold snow on the ground and on roofs longer than the older neighborhoods near the Providence line. Every day roof snow stays put is another cycle of melting during the day and freezing at night, and each cycle adds another layer to the ice along your gutters.

Trees make it worse. On lots surrounded by oaks and white pines, the roof may get only a few hours of low winter sun, and some eaves get none. Pine needles that collect in gutters in the fall freeze into a mat that blocks drainage. Raised ranches and colonials on those lots also tend to have long eaves and valleys where snow builds up. When a dam forms, we cut channels through it by hand so the trapped water can drain off the roof and through the gutters.

In eastern Johnston, Thornton, Graniteville and Hughesdale have older homes and post-war capes, and capes are among the houses most likely to get ice dams. Their upstairs rooms sit under the roof with little space for insulation, so heat escapes straight into the roof deck. We open the ice carefully, protecting shingles and gutters, then talk with you about heat cables for the eaves that keep icing. Ring (401) 274-3030 or send a picture of the ice. You will hear from us the same business day, and we let you know the day before we come.

Why ice dams form on Johnston homes

Higher, colder ground out west

Western Johnston sits higher and farther inland than the neighborhoods by the Providence line. Snow tends to stay longer there, and long-lasting roof snow gives an ice dam more freeze-thaw cycles to grow.

Shaded wooded lots

Homes set among oaks and pines can have roofs that see little direct sun in winter. Snow on the shaded side melts only from the heat inside the house, which is exactly how ice dams build.

Needles frozen in the gutters

White pines drop needles into gutters through the fall. Left in place, they soak up water and freeze into a solid mat, so meltwater hits a blocked gutter and freezes at the roof edge.

Capes in eastern Johnston

Post-war capes in Thornton, Graniteville and Hughesdale have upstairs rooms under the roof with little room for insulation. Heat escaping through those ceilings melts roof snow, and the cold overhang refreezes it.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Getting ahead of ice dams on your Johnston home

On wooded Johnston lots, start with a late-fall gutter cleaning that clears out leaves and pine needles, since a frozen mat of debris in the gutter is a common starting point for a dam. All Mesh Pro stainless steel mesh guards keep needles out so the gutters stay open into winter. On shaded eaves and capes that ice up every year, heat cables keep a channel open through the gutter and downspout. We do not do attic work, but better insulation and air sealing in a cape or older home reduces the melting that starts the problem, and a roof rake helps on eaves you can reach from the ground.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do gutter guards help prevent ice dams?
They help indirectly. Guards keep leaves and pine needles out, so the gutter is not packed with frozen debris when snow starts melting. That gives meltwater a path to the downspout. On roofs that still dam up, heat cables are the more direct fix, and guards and cables can work together.
Can you remove an ice dam without damaging my roof?
Yes. Our approach is built around protecting the roof. We cut channels through the ice by hand so the trapped water can drain, then let the rest melt off on its own. It is careful work, and it stops the leak.
Do you work on homes in western Johnston?
Yes. We remove ice dams and install heat cables across Johnston, including wooded lots in the western part of town and older neighborhoods like Thornton, Graniteville, Hughesdale and Simmonsville. Phone (401) 274-3030 or upload a photo with the form here. You get an answer the same business day, and the estimate is free.
Why does one side of my roof get ice dams and not the other?
Usually because of sun and shade. The side of the roof facing south gets enough sun to clear the snow, while the north side, or a side shaded by trees, keeps its snow longer. Meltwater from attic heat refreezes at that cold, shaded eave.
