We stop Jamestown ice dams from pushing meltwater into porch ceilings and old plaster

Jamestown sits in the middle of Narragansett Bay, and the water around it shapes winter here. Storms that bring steady snow inland often arrive on the island as a mix of snow, sleet and rain, then turn cold once the wind swings around. That pattern is hard on roofs. Slush packs into gutters and the lower rows of shingles, freezes overnight, and leaves a ridge that blocks the next round of meltwater. One or two of those cycles can be enough to start a leak.

Many Jamestown homes have the features ice dams look for. Older summer houses in Shoreby Hill and near the village have steep main roofs that shed snow onto low-slope porch roofs, where it sits and melts slowly. Houses that began as summer places often have patchy attic insulation, so heat reaches the roof deck. In Jamestown Shores, on the north end, smaller homes sit among trees that shade the roof for much of the winter, so snow stays put longer.

When ice has already built up, we take care of it by hand. We cut channels through the dam so the trapped water can drain off the roof and out of the gutters, working carefully around cedar shingles, old trim and the gutters themselves. We do not pound the ice off. Send a photo of the roof edge through the form or call (401) 274-3030, and we will respond the same business day with next steps and a free estimate.

Why ice dams form on Jamestown homes

Mixed storms over the bay

Surrounded by water, Jamestown often gets storms that change between snow, sleet and rain. Wet snow at the eaves soaks up water and freezes hard when temperatures drop behind the storm, building ice faster than a dry snowfall would.

Porch roofs under steep main roofs

Shoreby Hill and village houses often have a steep main roof above a wide, low-slope porch roof. Snow slides down and piles onto the porch, where it melts slowly and refreezes at the edge, and leaks show up in the porch ceiling.

Shaded lots in Jamestown Shores

Trees around many homes on the north end, in Jamestown Shores, keep roofs shaded through the short winter days. Snow on those roofs lingers long after open lots near Beavertail are clear, which gives ice more time to build at the gutters.

Wind from the East and West Passages

Wind off either passage blows snow across the roof and packs it into valleys and against dormers on the sheltered side. Those drifts are deeper than the snow around them and keep feeding meltwater toward a frozen roof edge.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Jamestown roof next winter

Prevention starts with gutters that can drain. We clean gutters by hand before winter, and the downspouts are cleaned by hand as part of every cleaning. On porch roofs and eaves that ice up every year, roof and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater. Under trees, a Proflow or All Mesh Pro gutter guard keeps late leaves out so the gutter is clear when snow arrives. We do not do attic work, but it is worth having an insulation contractor look at insulation and air sealing in an older summer house, and a roof rake helps clear the first few feet above the eaves.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove ice from a porch roof in Shoreby Hill?
Yes. Low porch roofs under steep main roofs are a common ice dam spot on older Jamestown houses. We cut channels through the ice by hand so the trapped water drains to the gutter, taking care with old trim and shingles. Call (401) 274-3030 or send a photo to get started.
Why does my Jamestown house get ice dams when the snow melts so fast here?
Fast melting is part of the problem. When snow turns to slush and the temperature drops again overnight, the water freezes at the cold roof edge. A few of those cycles in one week can build a dam as thick as one left by a much bigger snowfall inland.
Will gutter guards help with ice dams?
Indirectly. Guards do not stop ice from forming, but they keep leaves and twigs out of the gutter, so it is not already packed with wet debris that freezes solid. We install Proflow aluminum guards and All Mesh Pro stainless mesh guards. Where ice keeps coming back, heat cables are the better tool.
How do I get an ice dam estimate in Jamestown?
Call (401) 274-3030 or send the form on this page with a photo of the icy section of roof and gutter. Expect a reply the same business day, and the estimate costs nothing. We let you know the day before we come.
