The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

On an old Newport house, an ice dam does not just drip. Meltwater backs up under the shingles and into plaster walls and window trim that have lasted this long because they stayed dry.

We keep Newport ice dams from soaking the plaster and trim of your older home
Newport's winters are milder than inland Rhode Island's, but the city still gets snow, and it often comes with rain behind it. On the colonial houses of The Point and Historic Hill, that wet snow collects behind dormers, in the valleys between roof sections, and along eaves that hang over the sidewalk. When it freezes at the edge, the water behind it backs up under the shingles. In a house with plaster walls and original trim, that water does damage long before a stain appears.
Older Newport houses also lose a lot of heat through the roof. Many were built long before modern insulation, and their attics are often small or partly finished, so warm air reaches the roof deck and melts snow from below. The meltwater runs to the cold overhang and freezes there. Larger Victorian houses near Bellevue Avenue and in the Kay-Catherine area add steep slopes, towers and porch roofs to the mix, which gives ice more corners to build in.
If you have an ice dam now, we remove it by hand, carefully cutting channels through the ice so the trapped water can drain into the gutters and away. That approach protects the roofing and the gutters. Icicles over a front walk are a real hazard on Newport's close-set streets, so the sooner the water has a way out, the better. Call (401) 274-3030Why ice dams form on Newport homes
Old houses with little insulation
Many colonial and Victorian homes in Newport were built long before attic insulation was standard. Heat rising through the top floor warms the roof deck, melts snow from underneath and sends water down to the eaves, where it refreezes into a dam.
Dormers, valleys and porch roofs
Steep roofs broken up by dormers, valleys and lower porch roofs trap snow in corners. Those pockets melt and refreeze unevenly, so ice tends to build in the same spots every winter, often right above a window or doorway.
Snow, then rain, then a hard freeze
With water on three sides, Newport gets plenty of storms that start as snow and change to rain. The slush soaks the snow at the roof edge and freezes solid when the cold air returns, building a ridge of ice quickly.
Eaves over sidewalks on tight streets
On The Point and in the Fifth Ward, many houses sit right at the sidewalk. An ice dam there means icicles and falling ice over the front walk, and meltwater that drips onto steps and refreezes, so a street-side dam needs quick attention.
How we handle ice dams
Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.
Channels cut by hand
We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.
Heat cables
Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.
Keeping ice dams off your Newport roof next winter
Before winter, have your gutters cleaned by hand; the downspouts are part of every cleaning, and we take the elbows apart and clear them out. Old shade trees drop leaves late into fall, and a gutter packed with wet leaves turns to ice at the first hard freeze. Roof and gutter heat cables are a good fit for the valleys and street-side eaves that ice up year after year. A stainless mesh guard like All Mesh Pro keeps the gutter clear between cleanings. We do not do attic work, but better insulation and air sealing, done by a qualified contractor, is the long-term fix on many older homes, and a roof rake helps clear the eaves after a big storm.

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!
Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!
