We stop North Providence ice dams from leaking into ranch and split-level ceilings

Post-war North Providence was built on ranches, raised ranches, split-levels and capes, and each has its own ice dam habit. Ranches have long eaves on low-pitched roofs, so meltwater moves slowly and has a short climb to reach under the shingles. Capes have upstairs rooms tucked under the roof slope with little space for insulation. On both, the warm house melts the snow from below, and the overhang past the exterior wall stays cold enough to refreeze it.

Split-levels add a twist. Snow sliding off the upper roof lands on the lower roof and piles up where the lower roof meets the wall of the upper level. That corner is shaded, takes meltwater from above and is often where a split-level leaks first. We remove those dams by hand, cutting channels through the ice so the water pooled behind it can reach the gutter and drain. Working this way keeps the shingles and gutters undamaged.

Shade and wind play a part too. Mature oaks and maples in Fruit Hill and other older sections of town keep parts of many roofs out of the sun, and wind drifts snow behind chimneys and onto the sheltered side of a roof. Those spots hold snow longest and dam up most often. We can install heat cables on eaves that ice up every year and clean the gutters before the snow. Why ice dams form on North Providence homes

Split-level roofs that meet a wall

Where a lower roof runs into the wall of the upper level, snow slides down and piles up. Meltwater collects in that shaded corner, freezes against the wall and can back up under the shingles or behind the siding.

Low-pitched ranch roofs

Ranches and raised ranches have gentle roof slopes. Meltwater moves slowly toward the gutter, and when ice blocks it, the water does not have to rise far before it gets under the roofing.

Cape bedrooms under the roof

Capes put upstairs bedrooms right under the roof slope, with knee walls and little space for insulation. Heat leaks into the roof deck there, and that melt refreezes at the eave below.

Trees and chimneys that hold snow

Mature oaks and maples shade many roofs in Fruit Hill and older parts of town, and chimneys collect drifts on their sheltered side. Snow sitting in those spots keeps feeding the ice at the eave.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Preparing a North Providence ranch or split-level for winter

Clean gutters going into winter are the first step, so book a cleaning after the oaks and maples have finished in late fall. On split-level corners and low ranch eaves that dam up every year, we can install roof and gutter heat cables to keep a melt channel open through the gutter and downspout. Gutter guards help keep that path clear of leaves and seeds. On a single-story ranch, a roof rake used from the ground can pull the first few feet of snow off the eave after a storm. For capes, ask an insulation contractor about the knee walls and attic air leaks, which we do not handle ourselves.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my split-level always leak in the same corner in winter?
That corner is usually where the lower roof meets the wall of the upper level. Snow slides down and piles up there, meltwater collects, and ice forms against the wall. We can open the dam by hand so the water drains, and a heat cable along that section can keep it from forming again.
Do heat cables work on ranch roofs?
Yes. On a low-pitched ranch roof, heat cables along the eave and in the gutter and downspout keep a path open so meltwater drains instead of backing up. They do not melt all the snow on the roof. They keep the drainage line open, which is what stops the leak.
Can you remove ice dams in Centredale and Fruit Hill?
Yes. We remove ice dams across North Providence, including Centredale, Fruit Hill, Marieville, Lymansville, Allendale and Greystone. We cut channels through the ice by hand so trapped water can drain without damaging shingles or gutters. A free estimate is a phone call away at (401) 274-3030, or attach a photo to the form on this page.
What are the signs of an ice dam?
Look for a thick ridge of ice along the roof edge, heavy icicles hanging from the gutters, gutters sagging under the weight, or water stains on ceilings and walls near the outside of the house. Wet insulation in the attic is another sign. If you see any of these, send us a photo.
