River valleys. Pine shade. Long freezes.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Richmond, RI

Richmond's inland cold and heavy pine shade let snow sit on roofs long enough to build real ice dams, and the water behind them ends up in your attic insulation. We open the ice by hand, cutting a path so that water can drain.

Snow on a roof above a gutter in winter
Richmond, Rhode Island

We keep Richmond ice dams from soaking your attic and ceilings

Richmond sits in the middle of Washington County, well back from the ocean, and winter here feels it. The Wood River and Pawcatuck River valleys, the wetlands and the woods all hold the cold, and on still nights the low ground near the rivers can turn noticeably colder than the hills. Snow that falls on a Richmond roof tends to stay, especially on homes tucked into the pines around Wyoming, Carolina and Shannock.

A lot of Richmond houses are newer homes built on wooded lots off Route 138 and Route 112. Many have attached garages with bonus rooms above, cathedral ceilings and rooflines with several valleys. Those features are where heat leaks into the roof and where snow collects. Older village houses in Usquepaug and Shannock have their own problem: attics with little insulation, so the whole roof deck runs warm while the eaves stay cold.

When a dam forms, we open it up by hand. Careful cuts through the ice give the meltwater pooled behind it a channel to the gutters and off the roof, and the shingles and gutters are protected as we go. After that, we can set you up with heat cables for the eaves that keep damming and a late-fall cleaning so the gutters are open. Give us a call at (401) 274-3030 and you will hear back the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Richmond homes

Cold air in the river valleys

Homes on low ground near the Wood and Pawcatuck rivers sit where cold air settles on calm winter nights. Meltwater from the afternoon freezes quickly at the eaves after dark, and the ice ridge grows a little every day.

Pine shade over the roof

Richmond's white pines keep their needles all winter, so they shade roofs as heavily in January as in July. Snow on shaded sections can stay frozen through a long cold spell while the rest of the roof melts into it.

Bonus rooms and cathedral ceilings

Newer homes often have living space tucked under the roof, over the garage or behind a cathedral ceiling. Those areas are hard to insulate and ventilate well, so they warm the roof deck and start the melt that feeds an ice dam.

Needle-filled gutters

Pine needles fall all year and mat into a dense layer in the gutter. If that mat is still there in December, it freezes into a solid plug, and meltwater coming off the roof has nowhere to go but back up.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Getting your Richmond roof ready before the next freeze

Start with clean gutters going into winter. Under Richmond's pines, that may mean a late-fall cleaning even if you had one in spring. A stainless steel mesh guard like All Mesh Pro keeps needles from rebuilding the plug between cleanings. On the eaves, valleys and bonus-room roofs that dam every year, roof and gutter heat cables keep a drainage channel open. For the cause, have an insulation contractor look at insulation, air sealing and ventilation over bonus rooms and cathedral ceilings. We do not do that work, but it is the part that keeps the roof cold.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove an ice dam in Wyoming or Carolina?
Yes. We remove ice dams by hand throughout Richmond, including Wyoming, Carolina, Usquepaug, Shannock and the homes off Route 138 and Route 112. We carefully cut channels through the ice so the trapped water can drain, then talk with you about keeping it from coming back.
Why does the roof over my bonus room ice up first?
Rooms built into the roof, like bonus rooms over garages, are hard to insulate and ventilate. Heat escapes into the roof deck above them, melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. A heat cable on that section helps right away. Better insulation and air sealing, from an insulation contractor, fix the cause.
Do heat cables work on newer Richmond homes?
Yes. On complex rooflines, we run heat cables along the eaves that dam and inside the gutters and downspouts below them, so meltwater has a warm path all the way to the ground. They work best in clean gutters, so pair them with a late-fall cleaning or gutter guards.
Does a fall gutter cleaning help with ice dams under Richmond's pines?
Yes, especially under pines. Needles mat down into a plug that freezes solid, and ice dams build on top of it. A cleaning after the oaks drop their last leaves gets the gutters empty for winter. Call (401) 274-3030 or send a photo for a free quote.
