Shore cottages. Pine woods. Two kinds of winter.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Charlestown, RI

In Charlestown, ice dams catch both kinds of house: shore cottages that sit empty all winter and year-round homes under the pines north of Route 1. We cut channels through the ice by hand so the water drains off instead of coming in.

We clear Charlestown ice dams on cottages by the ponds and homes in the pines

Route 1 splits Charlestown's winter in two. To the south, along Ninigret Pond, Quonochontaug and the barrier beaches, the ocean keeps snow wet and short-lived, and storms often finish as rain. To the north, around Burlingame State Park, Watchaug Pond and the roads toward Carolina, the land is wooded and colder, and snow stays on shaded roofs well after the beach has melted out.

South of Route 1, many cottages were built for summer and later winterized. Low ceilings, additions with shallow roofs and attics with little insulation mean warm air reaches the roof quickly once the heat is on. Some sit closed with the thermostat turned low, so an ice dam can leak for a long time before an owner comes back. North of Route 1, year-round homes under tall white pines see longer-lasting snow and gutters packed with needles.

Our method is simple and slow on purpose. By hand, we cut channels through the ice so the meltwater trapped behind it can drain into the gutters and off the roof, without harming the shingles or the gutters. If you are away for the winter, a neighbor can send photos through the form for a quote. Calls to (401) 274-3030 get an answer the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Charlestown homes

Winterized summer cottages

Shore cottages turned into year-round or part-year homes often have shallow roofs, low attics and insulation added piecemeal. Once the heat runs, the roof deck warms unevenly, and meltwater freezes at the cold edge.

Mixed storms near the ponds

Along the salt ponds, winter storms often bring snow, then sleet, then rain. The roof ends up holding heavy slush that freezes into a hard lip of ice as soon as the cold returns.

Pine shade north of Route 1

Homes around Burlingame and Watchaug Pond sit under white pines that shade the roof all winter. Snow there lasts much longer than at the beach, and meltwater from warmer parts of the roof freezes at the shaded eaves.

Needles packed in the gutters

White pines drop needles every month of the year. By winter, a gutter under those trees can be packed tight, and once that mat freezes, melting snow has no way off the roof except back under the shingles.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Ice dam prevention for Charlestown cottages and pine-shaded homes

Time the gutter cleaning for late fall, after the last leaves drop and before a cottage closes for the season. Under the pines north of Route 1, an All Mesh Pro stainless steel mesh guard keeps needles from repacking the gutters, and it is backed by the manufacturer's warranty and a no-clog money-back guarantee. On eaves and shallow addition roofs that dam every winter, roof and gutter heat cables keep a channel open even when no one is home. For winterized cottages, attic insulation and air sealing make the biggest difference. That is a job for an insulation contractor, not us.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do homes in the woods north of Route 1 get more ice dams than cottages at the beach?
Often, yes. Snow lasts longer under the pines around Burlingame and Watchaug Pond, so roofs there go through more melt-and-freeze cycles. Cottages near the ponds see less lasting snow, but a winterized cottage with shallow roofs and little insulation can still dam after a single wet storm.
My cottage in Quonochontaug is closed for the winter. What should I do about ice dams?
Prevent first: a late-fall gutter cleaning before you close up, and heat cables on the eaves that dammed before. If a neighbor spots heavy icicles or ice at the roof edge, have them send photos through the form or call (401) 274-3030. We answer the same business day and can remove the dam by hand.
Do heat cables help on a winterized cottage?
Yes, especially on shallow addition roofs and the eaves over low attics. Cable laid along the roof edge and down through the gutter melts a path, so water drains instead of refreezing. Cables need a clear gutter to drain into, so we usually pair them with a late-fall cleaning.
How do you remove an ice dam without damaging the roof?
We do it by hand. Rather than forcing the ice off, we cut careful channels through it so the trapped water drains into the gutters. That leaves the shingles and gutters intact. Once the roof is draining, we can talk about what caused the dam and how to keep it away.
