We keep Warren ice dams from leaking into older homes on close-set streets

Warren packs a lot of old houses into a small town. In the historic district around Water Street and Main Street, homes from the 1700s and 1800s stand close to the street and close to each other. Many have lightly insulated attics, so heat from the rooms below warms the roof and melts snow from underneath. The water runs down to the cold eaves and freezes. On a tight lot, the icicles and dripping water land on steps, walkways and narrow side passages.

Out toward the Kickemuit River and Touisset, the picture changes. Homes sit on bigger lots with more open water nearby, and wind off the rivers drifts snow onto the sheltered side of the roof and into valleys. In between, neighborhoods of capes and ranches deal with the classic problems: upstairs rooms tucked under a cape roof, and long, low ranch roofs where meltwater moves slowly. Mature maples and oaks shade a lot of those roofs, too.

When a dam is already in place, we deal with it by hand, carefully cutting channels through the ice so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters. No pounding on shingles and no bent gutters. If ice has pulled a gutter loose, we can fix it once the ice is gone. Reach us at (401) 274-3030 or through the form; we answer the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Warren homes

Old attics in the historic district

Many older homes near Water Street and Main Street were built long before attic insulation was common. Heat escaping through the roof melts snow from below, and the water refreezes at the overhang, where the roof is no longer warmed by the house.

Wind off the Warren and Kickemuit rivers

Homes near the rivers and out in Touisset take wind off open water. It sweeps snow across the roof and piles it on the sheltered side and in valleys, where the deeper snow melts slowly into a cold gutter.

Capes and low ranch roofs

Warren's capes put bedrooms right under the roof, with little room for insulation behind the knee walls. Ranches spread meltwater across long, low slopes. Both give ice at the eaves an easy start once the snow begins to melt.

Gutters full of late leaves

Maples and oaks along Warren's older streets drop leaves into late fall, and a neighbor's tree can fill your gutters too. Leaves still in the gutter at the first freeze turn into a frozen plug that blocks meltwater.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

How to keep ice dams off your Warren roof

Make sure the gutters can drain before winter. A cleaning by hand in late fall clears out the leaves that would otherwise freeze in place. On eaves that ice up every year, especially street-side eaves over walkways, roof and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater. All Mesh Pro stainless mesh guards keep a neighbor's leaves out of your gutters between cleanings. We do not do attic work, but on an older house an insulation contractor can check the insulation and air sealing, which is often the real cause. A roof rake helps after a big storm.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you remove ice dams in the Warren historic district?
Yes. We work throughout Warren, from Water Street and Main Street to Touisset. We remove ice dams by hand, cutting channels through the ice so trapped meltwater drains, which protects old roofing and the gutters. Call (401) 274-3030 or use the form with a photo; we respond the same business day.
Where should meltwater go on a small Warren lot?
Away from the foundation and off walkways, where it would refreeze into a slip hazard. Downspouts that dump at the base of the house or across a narrow side yard cause trouble all winter. Downspout extensions, plus heat cables in the downspouts on problem corners, help keep water moving away from the house.
Can heat cables go on a cape in Warren?
Yes. Capes are among the homes most prone to ice dams, and heat cables along the eaves and in the gutters keep a channel open for meltwater. They treat the symptom, though. The cause on most capes is heat leaking into the roof behind the knee walls, which an insulation contractor can look at.
What does an ice dam look like from the ground?
Look for a thick band of ice along the roof edge, heavy icicles hanging from the gutters, and gutters starting to pull away from the house. Inside, check for water stains on ceilings or walls near the eaves. Any of those means water is backing up, and it is worth a call to (401) 274-3030.
