We keep Westerly's winter slush from freezing at the eaves and leaking into your ceilings

Westerly winters rarely stay simple. Being right on the ocean, the town often gets snow that turns to rain and then freezes again overnight, sometimes several times in one week. Each round leaves meltwater sitting at the roof edge, where the overhang is colder than the roof above the living space. When that water freezes in a ridge along the gutter, the next melt has nowhere to go but up under the shingles. That is an ice dam, and on the shore it can build from a modest snowfall.

The housing mix makes it worse in places. Many cottages near Misquamicut and Weekapaug were built as summer places and later turned into year-round homes, with heat added but little insulation above the ceiling. Warm air leaks into the attic, melts snow from below and feeds the dam. Larger shingled homes in Watch Hill have dormers and valleys where ice collects. Inland, around Bradford and along the Pawcatuck River, tree cover keeps snow on north-facing roofs well after the beach roads are bare.

When an ice dam is already there, we remove it by hand. We carefully cut channels through the ice so the trapped water can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, working to protect the shingles and gutters instead of hacking at them. If it is a seasonal house and you are out of town, a photo from a neighbor or caretaker helps us see what is going on. Why ice dams form on Westerly homes

Snow, rain, then a hard freeze

Storms along the Westerly shore often change from snow to rain and back again. Slush soaks into the snow at the eaves and freezes solid overnight. A few of those cycles build a thick ridge of ice faster than one big dry snowfall would.

Summer cottages turned year-round

Many beach-area houses near Misquamicut and Weekapaug started as summer cottages. Adding heat without adding much attic insulation lets warm air reach the underside of the roof, which melts snow from below and sends water down to the cold edge to freeze.

Shade along the Pawcatuck and in Bradford

Away from the beaches, wooded lots near the Pawcatuck River and up toward Bradford keep north-facing roofs in shade for most of the winter day. Snow lingers there for weeks, which gives an ice dam more time to grow.

Ocean wind piling snow on one side

Nor'easters blow snow across the roof and drop it on the sheltered side, often into valleys and behind dormers on the bigger Watch Hill houses. Those deep drifts melt slowly and hold water right where the shingles overlap.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Westerly roof next winter

Start in late fall. A gutter full of wet oak leaves freezes into a solid block, so we clean gutters and downspouts by hand before winter sets in. On eaves that ice up every year, roof and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater. Gutter guards, either Proflow aluminum or All Mesh Pro stainless mesh, keep leaves from refilling the gutters after that last cleaning. Two things we do not sell but recommend: have an insulation contractor check the attic insulation and air sealing, especially in a converted cottage, and keep a roof rake to pull the first few feet of snow off the eaves.

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you remove an ice dam from a Westerly house?
By hand. We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters. We do not chip off the whole dam or pound at it, since that is how shingles and gutters get damaged. Call (401) 274-3030 or send a photo to set it up.
My summer house in Weekapaug sits empty all winter. Can it still get ice dams?
It can, especially if the heat stays on low to protect the pipes. Any warmth that reaches the attic can melt snow, and nobody is there to see the icicles or a stain on the ceiling. Clean gutters before you close up, heat cables on problem eaves, and a neighbor who can send a photo after a storm all help.
Do you handle ice dams in Watch Hill and Misquamicut?
Yes. We work throughout Westerly, from Watch Hill, Misquamicut and Weekapaug to Dunn's Corners, Bradford and downtown. Call (401) 274-3030 or send the form with a photo of the roof edge and gutters. We respond the same business day and give a free estimate before any work starts.
Will heat cables work on a shingled beach cottage?
Usually, yes. Roof and gutter heat cables run along the eaves and through the gutters and downspouts, keeping a channel open so meltwater can drain instead of refreezing. They work best with clean gutters. On a cottage with little attic insulation they treat the symptom, so it is worth having the attic looked at too.
