We stop Medway ice dams from leaking into cape bedrooms and ranch ceilings

A lot of Medway's housing went up in the middle of the last century, and capes and ranches are everywhere. A cape puts its upstairs bedrooms right under the roof, with short knee walls and sloped ceilings, so there is very little room for insulation and the roof over those rooms stays warm. A ranch has a low-pitch roof that snow sits on rather than sheds. Either way, meltwater reaches the cold eave, freezes, and the dam starts to grow.

In Medway village and West Medway, the older homes have their own issues: thin attics, steep roofs with dormers, and gutters that have been in place for many years. When an ice dam is holding back water on any of these houses, we remove it by hand. We cut channels through the ice so the trapped water drains to the gutters and off the roof. It is careful work, and the shingles and gutters come through it intact.

Keeping the next dam from forming is the real goal. Roof and gutter heat cables along the eaves over cape bedrooms, or along a ranch's long eave, keep a path open for meltwater. A gutter cleaning in late fall, after the maples and oaks have dropped, means the gutters are not full of frozen leaves when the thaw comes, and gutter guards keep them clear. Why ice dams form on Medway homes

Bedrooms tucked into cape roofs

Cape-style homes have upstairs rooms built into the roof, with knee walls and sloped ceilings. There is little space for insulation, so heat warms the roof directly and melts snow from underneath all winter.

Low-pitch ranch roofs

Ranches have long, low-pitch roofs that hold snow instead of shedding it. Meltwater creeps slowly toward the eaves, and it only takes a small ridge of ice at the edge to make it pool.

Older village homes

Houses in Medway village and West Medway are often older, with thin attic insulation, dormers and steep roof sections. Heat loss and busy rooflines give ice plenty of places to build.

Frozen leaves and maple seeds

Medway yards have plenty of maples and oaks. Gutters that go into winter holding leaves and seeds freeze solid, so meltwater coming off the roof has nowhere to drain and backs up behind the ice.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Getting a Medway cape or ranch through winter without ice dams

Start with the parts of the roof that iced up last winter, usually the eaves below cape bedrooms or the long front eave of a ranch. Heat cables there and in the gutters and downspouts keep meltwater moving through cold spells. Have the gutters cleaned in late fall so leaves and seeds are not frozen in them, and consider gutter guards to keep them that way. A roof rake on the first few feet of snow helps on a low ranch roof. Insulating knee walls and sealing attic air leaks is the long-term fix, and an insulation contractor handles that, not us.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Medway cape get ice dams every winter?
Because the upstairs rooms are built into the roof. With knee walls and sloped ceilings, there is little insulation between the warm rooms and the roof deck, so snow melts from below and refreezes at the cold eaves. Heat cables along those eaves help a great deal, and better insulation helps most.
Is a ranch roof more likely to get ice dams?
It can be. A low-pitch ranch roof holds snow longer and drains meltwater slowly, so even a small ice ridge at the edge can back water up. Clean gutters, heat cables on the eave and raking the edge after big storms all help keep it clear.
What happens when you remove an ice dam in Medway?
We cut channels through the ice dam by hand so the trapped water drains off the roof and into the gutters. We do not break the dam off in pieces, which can damage shingles and pull gutters loose. Once water is draining, the leak stops and the rest of the ice melts away.
Can I get an ice dam estimate in West Medway?
Yes. We serve all of Medway, including West Medway and Medway village. Call (508) 399-7600 or use the form to send photos of the ice and any water stains. There is no charge for the estimate, and we respond the same business day.
