We stop Norfolk ice dams from leaking into cathedral ceilings and shaded walls

Norfolk homes tend to sit on large lots with woods all around, and that shade changes how a roof behaves in winter. The sunny side melts clear between storms, while the shaded side stays white and cold. Any heat leaking from the house melts the bottom of that snow, the water runs down to an eave that never sees the sun, and it freezes there. Over a few weeks, the ridge of ice gets big enough to hold back a pool of water.

Larger homes, including many in Norfolk, often have cathedral ceilings, dormers and tall entryways. A cathedral ceiling leaves only a thin space between the warm room and the roof, so snow above it melts fast. When a dam is already holding water, we remove it by hand, cutting channels through the ice so the trapped water can drain into the gutters. The shingles and gutters stay intact, because careful work matters on a roof like that.

Then we work on the next winter. Roof and gutter heat cables on the shaded eaves and over warm rooms keep meltwater draining. Gutters that get a thorough cleaning after the oaks drop are ready for the thaw, and gutter guards keep pine needles and leaves from filling them back up. We serve all of Norfolk, from the town center to Pondville. Call (508) 399-7600, or attach photos to the form, for a free estimate. Our answer comes the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Norfolk homes

Shaded north sides

With woods around most lots, many Norfolk roofs have one side that rarely sees winter sun. Snow lingers on that side, the eaves stay frozen, and meltwater from attic heat freezes along the edge.

Cathedral ceilings

Rooms with cathedral ceilings leave little space for insulation and air between the living space and the roof deck. The roof above them warms quickly, so snow melts from below and ice forms at the eave.

Needles and leaves in the gutters

Oaks and white pines drop leaves and needles into Norfolk gutters well into late fall. If they are still there when winter arrives, they freeze into a solid mass that blocks meltwater from draining.

Wide, complex roofs

Bigger homes have wide roofs with valleys, dormers and several levels. Valleys send meltwater to a single point at the eave, and where a lower roof meets a higher wall, snow piles deep and refreezes.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Heading off ice dams on a shaded Norfolk roof

Walk around the house after the first snow and note which eaves stay white the longest. Those shaded sections, along with eaves below cathedral ceilings, are where heat cables do the most good, run along the roof edge and through the gutters and downspouts. Book a gutter cleaning after the last leaves come down, and think about gutter guards on a heavily wooded lot. Sealing air leaks and adding insulation over warm rooms stops ice dams at the source. That is work for an insulation contractor, not a gutter company, but it pays off.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does only the back of my Norfolk house get ice dams?
Most likely it is the shaded side. When trees block the winter sun, the snow and eaves on that side stay cold while the rest of the roof melts clear. Heat from inside melts the snow from below, and the water freezes at the cold edge. Heat cables on that side help most.
Can you remove an ice dam above a cathedral ceiling?
Yes. We cut channels through the ice by hand so the water trapped behind it drains into the gutters, which stops it from leaking into the ceiling. Cathedral ceilings often get ice dams repeatedly, so we may also suggest heat cables along that section of the eave.
Should I get my gutters cleaned before winter in Norfolk?
Yes. Leaves and needles left in the gutters freeze into a solid block, and meltwater has nowhere to go but back up the roof. A cleaning in late fall, after the oaks are bare, is the best timing. Gutter guards keep them clear after that.
Do you remove ice dams in Pondville and the town center?
Yes. We cover all of Norfolk, including Pondville, the town center and the neighborhoods off Route 115 and Route 1A. Phone (508) 399-7600, or use the form to send pictures of the ice and of any stains indoors. Estimates are free, and replies go out the same business day.
