Pine shade. Roof valleys. Ice that won't let go.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in North Attleboro, MA

On a North Attleboro colonial, snow lingers in the roof valleys and on the shaded north side long after the street is clear. When that ice holds back meltwater, it leaks into the second floor. We cut it open by hand so the water drains.

Snow on a roof above a gutter in winter
North Attleboro, Massachusetts

We keep North Attleboro ice dams from leaking into second-floor rooms

North Attleboro's subdivisions are full of two-story colonials, split-levels and capes with dormers, many built into the woods off Route 1 and around Whiting Pond and Falls Pond. Those houses have more going on up top than a plain gable: valleys where two roofs meet, dormers that break up the slope, a garage roof tied into the main house. Every one of those spots collects snow, and every one is a place an ice dam can start.

Then there are the trees. Tall white pines and oaks shade a lot of North Attleboro roofs, so the north-facing slope may hold snow for weeks while the south side melts off. Inland cold does the rest. Meltwater from the sunny side runs down to the shaded, frozen edge and stops. When it backs up, you see it as a stain spreading across a bedroom ceiling or water running down the inside of a window frame.

We remove the ice by hand. Working at the roof edge, we carefully cut channels through the dam so the water pooled behind it can run off the roof and out the downspouts. It is slow, careful work that keeps shingles and gutter hangers intact. After that, we can clean the gutters, check that the downspouts are open, and install heat cables in the valleys and eaves that keep icing up. Estimates are free at (508) 399-7600.

Why ice dams form on North Attleboro homes

Valleys and dormers

Colonials and capes with dormers have valleys where two roof planes meet. Snow piles deepest there, melts slowly and channels water toward one short stretch of gutter, which is often the first place a dam forms.

Bonus rooms over garages

Many North Attleboro colonials have a heated room over the garage with sloped ceilings and a thin space between drywall and roof. That warm ceiling melts snow from below, and ice builds along the garage eave.

Pine-shaded north slopes

Wooded lots leave tall pines shading the north side of the roof all winter. Snow there can sit for weeks, so water draining from the sunny side meets a frozen, shaded edge and backs up.

Split-level step-downs

Split-levels have an upper roof that drains onto a lower one. Snow and meltwater from above pile onto the lower roof, which then freezes at its own eave and holds water against the wall where the two levels meet.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Stopping the next ice dam on your North Attleboro home

Most of the trouble spots on a North Attleboro house are predictable: the valleys, the eave over a bonus room, the shaded north side. Those are where we install roof and gutter heat cables, so a path stays open for meltwater even when the rest of the edge is frozen. Before winter, have the gutters cleaned of pine needles and oak leaves, since a packed gutter freezes into a solid block. An All Mesh Pro or Proflow guard keeps them clear afterward. Inside, insulating and air sealing over the garage room and attic hatch makes the biggest long-term difference; that is work for an insulation contractor, not us.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do heat cables work in roof valleys?
Yes, valleys are one of the best places for them. A heat cable laid in a zigzag along the eave and run up the valley keeps a channel open so meltwater can reach the gutter and downspout. We install roof and gutter heat cables on North Attleboro homes where the same spot ices up every winter.
Why do I get ice over my garage but not the rest of the house?
If there is a heated room over your garage, that is the likely reason. Sloped ceilings in those rooms often leave little space for insulation, so heat reaches the roof deck and melts snow from below. The water refreezes at the cold garage eave. A heat cable on that eave is a common fix, along with better insulation.
Do you remove ice dams in Attleboro Falls and Adamsdale?
Yes. We remove ice dams by hand in Attleboro Falls, Adamsdale, the neighborhoods around Whiting Pond and Falls Pond, and everywhere else in North Attleboro. Call (508) 399-7600 or send a photo of the roof edge through the estimate form, and we will get back to you the same business day.
Should I clean my gutters before winter in North Attleboro?
Yes, and late enough to catch the oaks, which often hold their leaves into November. Pine needles and wet leaves left in a gutter freeze into a solid plug, so the first meltwater of the season has nowhere to go but back up the roof. Clean gutters and open downspouts are the cheapest ice dam prevention there is.
