North-end woods. Roof valleys. Ice opened by hand.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Cumberland, RI

On a big Cumberland colonial, one roof valley can feed enough meltwater into an ice dam to stain a bedroom ceiling in a single thaw. We cut that ice open so the water drains, then help you keep it from forming again.

We stop Cumberland ice dams from turning roof valleys into ceiling leaks

Cumberland stretches from the Pawtucket line all the way up to the Massachusetts border, and winter feels different at each end. Up around Diamond Hill, Arnold Mills and Cumberland Hill, homes sit higher, under thicker woods, and snow tends to stay on roofs longer. Down in Valley Falls, Lonsdale and Berkeley, the houses are older and closer together. Ice dams show up in both places, just for different reasons.

In the north end, many homes are larger colonials with complex rooflines: several gables, dormers and valleys where two roof planes meet. Every valley channels snowmelt into one corner of the eave, so that is where ice builds fastest and where leaks start. In the older villages near the river, the culprit is more often a warm, under-insulated attic melting snow from below. Either way, the water ends up behind the ice and then inside your walls.

We handle ice dams the careful way, by hand. Channels cut through the ice let the pooled water run off the roof and through the gutters, without damaging the shingles under it. Once the water is moving, we can talk about heat cables for the valleys that ice every year, guards for the gutters under the trees, and a fall cleaning schedule. Why ice dams form on Cumberland homes

Roof valleys on newer colonials

Where two roof planes meet, snowmelt from both sides funnels into one narrow spot at the eave. On the larger homes in Cumberland's northern neighborhoods, those valleys often sit right above a gutter corner, which is where ice piles up first.

Higher, wooded north end

Diamond Hill and the land around Arnold Mills sit higher and are more wooded than the river villages. Shade from the trees and colder nights keep snow on roofs longer, so ice has more time to build at the edge.

Older homes near the Blackstone

Two-families and mill-era houses in Valley Falls, Lonsdale and Berkeley often have little attic insulation. Warmth from the living space reaches the roof deck, so snow melts on top of a heated attic and turns back to ice at the eave.

Drifts behind dormers and gables

Nor'easter winds drop deep drifts on the sheltered side of a roof and behind dormers and gables. Cumberland homes with busy rooflines collect more of those drifts, and each one becomes a slow source of meltwater that refreezes at the eave.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Fixes that keep Cumberland roof valleys and eaves clear of ice

The roof valleys that ice up every winter are the best place for roof and gutter heat cables, run along the eave and down into the gutter so meltwater has an open path. In the wooded north end, a late-fall gutter cleaning or a set of gutter guards keeps leaves from freezing into the gutter. Down in the older river villages, attic heat is usually the root cause, and air sealing plus insulation fixes it; that is a job for an insulation contractor, since we do not offer it. After heavy snow, raking the lowest few feet of the roof from the ground helps as well.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my house in north Cumberland get more ice than homes near Valley Falls?
Mostly elevation, shade and rooflines. Homes up toward Diamond Hill and Arnold Mills tend to sit higher and under more trees, so snow lingers, and their bigger roofs often have valleys that funnel meltwater into one spot. The older houses near the river get ice dams too, usually from attic heat rather than shade.
Can heat cables stop the ice under my roof valleys?
Valleys are one of the best uses for heat cable. Run along the lower end of the valley and through the gutter, the cable keeps a channel open so meltwater drains instead of refreezing. We look at where your ice forms each winter and place cable there, rather than wrapping the whole roof.
Will gutter guards make my ice problem worse?
Guards are not what causes an ice dam; heat escaping into the roof is. What guards do is keep leaves out, so the gutter is empty and open when snow starts melting. In Cumberland's wooded neighborhoods that is a real help. Both Proflow aluminum and All Mesh Pro stainless mesh are options.
Who do I call about an ice dam in Cumberland?
Call (401) 274-3030 or send the form on this page with a photo of the ice and any stains inside, and we will answer that same business day. Whether you live in Valley Falls, Ashton, Cumberland Hill or Arnold Mills, the estimate is free.
