Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Attleboro, MA

An ice dam on an older Attleboro house holds meltwater at the roof edge until it finds a way under the shingles and into a bedroom ceiling. We open the ice by hand so that water drains outside instead.

Snow on a roof above a gutter in winter
Attleboro, Massachusetts

We drain the ice dams that push meltwater into Attleboro ceilings

Most of the ice dams we hear about in Attleboro start in the attic, not the gutter. Heat from the living space warms the underside of the roof, snow melts high on the slope, and the water runs down until it reaches the cold overhang past the outside wall. There it freezes again. Night after night the ridge of ice grows, and the meltwater behind it starts backing up under shingles that were only ever meant to shed water downhill.

Attleboro's older housing makes that cycle easy. Two-family homes and older single-families around downtown and Capron Park were built long before modern insulation, and many have finished third-floor rooms or attic bedrooms tucked under the roof. Out toward Briggs Corner and the Rehoboth line, plenty of capes have knee walls and very little attic space. Warm rooms pressed right up against the roof deck are exactly where ice dams form first.

When the ice is already there, we remove it by hand. We carefully cut channels through the dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, working with the shingles rather than against them. Then we look at why it formed on your house: packed gutters, a downspout frozen solid, or a stretch of eave that keeps icing up and needs a heat cable. Call (508) 399-7600 for a free estimate.

Why ice dams form on Attleboro homes

Attic rooms in older houses

Many older Attleboro homes near downtown have finished rooms or bedrooms right under the roof with little insulation behind the plaster. That heat melts snow from below, and the water refreezes over the cold eaves, building ice along the front edge.

Cold air along the Ten Mile River

Low ground along the Ten Mile River, through old mill villages like Dodgeville and Hebronville, is where cold air settles on still winter nights. A sunny afternoon melts a little snow off the roof, and the evening freeze locks that water at the gutter.

Capes with knee walls

Toward Briggs Corner and the Rehoboth and Norton lines, many capes have second-floor rooms with knee walls and almost no attic. Warm air leaks into those small spaces and heats the lower roof, the textbook setup for an ice dam.

Porch roofs on two-family homes

Two-family homes often have porch roofs, back stair roofs and low-slope sections tucked under the main roof. Snow slides off the upper slope and piles onto those flatter roofs, where meltwater has little pitch to drain and backs up quickly.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Attleboro roof next winter

Start in the fall. Once the maples and oaks are bare, have the gutters cleaned, with the downspouts cleaned by hand as part of the job, so meltwater has a clear path off the roof; a gutter full of frozen leaves is a dam before the snow even starts. On eaves that ice up every year, especially over attic bedrooms and porch roofs, we install roof and gutter heat cables that keep a channel open. Gutter guards keep the gutters clear between cleanings. The long-term fix is in the attic: better insulation, air sealing and ventilation, which we do not do ourselves but strongly recommend. A roof rake for the first few feet of snow helps too.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Attleboro house get ice dams when my neighbor's doesn't?
Usually because of what is under your roof. A house with an attic bedroom, a leaky attic hatch or thin insulation sends more heat into the roof deck, so it melts snow faster than the house next door. Shade, roof pitch and clogged gutters play a part too. We can remove the ice and point out the likely cause.
Can you remove an ice dam without damaging my shingles?
Yes, and that is the reason we work by hand. Instead of chopping the whole dam off, we carefully cut channels through the ice so the trapped water drains. That relieves the backup without prying at frozen shingles or bending the gutter. Hammering at ice from a ladder is how most roof and gutter damage happens.
Do you handle ice dams on two-family homes near downtown Attleboro?
Yes. Two- and three-story homes around downtown and Capron Park are common in Attleboro, and we remove ice dams on them the same careful way, along the main eaves and on the porch roofs below. If ice keeps forming in the same spot every winter, heat cables are usually the next step.
How quickly can you help with an ice dam in Attleboro?
Call (508) 399-7600 or send the estimate form with a photo of the ice taken from the ground. We respond the same business day and can often tell a lot from the photo. While you wait, keep buckets under any drips and stay off the icy roof yourself.
