Cold country. Old farmhouses. Snow that stays.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Rehoboth, MA

In inland Rehoboth, snow can sit on a shaded farmhouse roof for weeks, and every sunny day sends meltwater down to a frozen edge. When it backs up, it soaks old plaster and timbers. We open the ice by hand so it drains.

We stop Rehoboth ice dams before meltwater gets into old walls and ceilings

Rehoboth sits well inland from the bay, and its winters show it. Once snow lands on a roof here, especially one shaded by woods, it can stay for a long time. That gives an ice dam days or weeks to grow. Each sunny afternoon melts a little snow higher up, the water runs to the cold overhang and freezes, and the ridge of ice at the edge gets taller and holds back more water.

Many Rehoboth houses were built long before anyone thought about attic insulation. Antique farmhouses and old capes often have rooms tucked under the roof, chimneys running through the middle and additions built on over the years: an ell off the back, a breezeway, a newer garage. Every place a lower roof meets a taller wall is a spot where sliding snow piles up and freezes. On an old house, the water that gets past the ice goes into plaster, lath and timber framing.

We remove ice dams by hand, carefully cutting channels through the ice so the meltwater trapped behind it can drain through the gutters and off the roof. We take our time on older roofs, because brittle shingles and old fascia don't forgive rough work. Then we can clear the gutters, check the downspouts and fit heat cables where the ice keeps coming back. Call (508) 399-7600 for a free estimate anywhere in Rehoboth.

Why ice dams form on Rehoboth homes

Inland cold and lasting snow

Away from the milder air near the bay, Rehoboth stays colder through the winter. Snow that would turn to slush closer to the water can sit on roofs here for weeks, giving ice dams plenty of time to build.

Antique homes with little insulation

Farmhouses and old capes often have thin or no insulation between upstairs rooms and the roof. That warmth melts snow from the underside, and the water freezes again over the eaves where the roof hangs past the walls.

Ells, additions and breezeways

Homes that grew over time have lower roofs butting into taller walls. Snow slides off the main roof and piles on the addition, where meltwater collects against the wall and freezes into a dam at the lower eave.

Woods on every side

Houses set back in the trees get little winter sun on their roofs. Shaded slopes stay frozen, so meltwater from the sunny side runs into ice that never gets a chance to clear.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Rehoboth roof next winter

On older Rehoboth homes, the insulation fix can be hard: rooms under the roof, no attic to crawl into, plaster walls you don't want to open up. That is where roof and gutter heat cables earn their keep, holding a drain path open along the eaves and at the spots where an addition meets the main house. Get the gutters cleaned after the leaves are down so they go into winter empty; on a wooded lot, a gutter guard keeps them that way. If you can improve attic insulation or air sealing, an insulation contractor is the right call. A roof rake on the single-story ells helps too.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do heat cables make sense on an antique Rehoboth farmhouse?
Often, yes. Many antique homes can't easily get modern attic insulation without major work, so the roof keeps losing heat. Heat cables don't stop snow from melting, but they keep a channel open at the eave and gutter so the water drains instead of backing up. We install them where ice forms year after year.
Why does ice build up where my addition meets the main house?
Snow slides off the taller roof and piles onto the lower one, and the wall of the main house traps it there. Meltwater collects in that corner and freezes at the lower eave. It is one of the most common ice dam spots on Rehoboth homes. A heat cable along that eave and a clear gutter below it usually solve it.
Do you remove ice dams on back-road homes in Rehoboth?
Yes. We serve every part of Rehoboth, including homes down long driveways and back roads near Anawan Rock and the Palmer River. Phone (508) 399-7600, or attach a picture of the icy eave to the estimate form. You will hear back the same business day, and the estimate costs nothing.
Should I rake the snow off my roof?
If you can do it safely from the ground, yes. A roof rake that pulls the first few feet of snow off the eaves leaves less snow to melt and refreeze at the edge. Never climb onto a snowy roof, and don't chop at ice with a shovel or hammer. If a dam has already formed, call us to remove it by hand.
