Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Seekonk, MA

Snow on a roof above a gutter in winter
Seekonk, Massachusetts

We clear the ice dams that back water into Seekonk ranches and capes

A ranch or cape sounds like an easy roof, and in summer it is. In winter, the same low, shallow roof is one of the shapes most prone to ice dams. Snow sits on a gentle slope longer, and meltwater moves slowly toward the eave. On a cape, the upstairs rooms are tucked under the roof with knee walls on each side, so the warm space sits inches from the shingles. Seekonk has a lot of both.

The oaks add their own problem. Seekonk's big oaks hang onto their leaves late, and plenty of them come down after the last fall cleaning. Those leaves settle in the gutter, soak up the first wet snow and freeze into a plug. Now the gutter is part of the dam. Meltwater coming down the roof hits a frozen trough, spreads back under the first courses of shingles and shows up inside along the top of a window or a closet wall.

Mr. Gutter takes ice dams apart by hand. We carefully cut channels through the ice so the water trapped behind it can flow off the roof and through the gutter, without hammering at the shingles or wrenching the gutter off the fascia. Then we can clear any frozen leaves, open the downspouts and talk about heat cables for the stretch of eave that ices up every year. For a free estimate, call (508) 399-7600.

Why ice dams form on Seekonk homes

Low-pitch ranch roofs

Seekonk's ranches and raised ranches have shallow roofs and long eaves. Snow stays put on a gentle pitch, and meltwater crawls toward the edge slowly enough to refreeze, so one dam can stretch across the entire front of the house.

Capes with knee walls

Cape-style homes put bedrooms right under the roof, with small knee-wall spaces behind the walls. Those spaces are hard to insulate well, and the heat that slips through warms the lower roof just above the cold overhang.

Late-falling oak leaves

Oaks in Seekonk often drop the last of their leaves after the gutters were cleaned. Those leaves freeze in the trough with the first wet snow, and a gutter that cannot drain turns into the base of an ice dam.

Woods behind the house

Homes backing up to woods and conservation land near Caratunk get long shadows on the rear roof in winter. Snow there stays frozen while the front melts, so ice tends to build on the back side first, where you are least likely to notice.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping ice dams off your Seekonk roof next winter

Time your last gutter cleaning for after the oaks are bare, even if that means early December, so the gutters go into winter empty. A Proflow or All Mesh Pro gutter guard keeps late leaves out after that. On ranches and capes that ice up in the same place every year, roof and gutter heat cables keep a drain path open along the eave. The bigger fix is usually inside: sealing air leaks and adding insulation behind knee walls and over the ceiling. We don't do attic work, but it is worth having an insulation contractor take a look. And keep a roof rake handy for the first few feet of snow.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cape-style homes in Seekonk more likely to get ice dams?
Generally, yes. Capes have living space right under the roof and small knee-wall areas that are hard to insulate, so more heat reaches the roof deck. That melts snow from below, and the water refreezes at the cold eave. If your cape ices up every winter, heat cables along the eaves and better attic insulation are the usual fixes.
Can leaves left in my gutters cause ice dams?
They can make one much worse. Wet leaves freeze into a solid block in the gutter, so meltwater has no place to go and backs up under the shingles. In Seekonk, oaks drop late, so a gutter cleaned in October may be full again by the first snow. A final cleaning after the trees are bare helps.
What happens when you remove an ice dam?
We work by hand at the roof edge, carefully cutting channels through the ice so the water trapped behind it can drain into the gutter and out the downspout. We don't chip the whole dam off or pry at the shingles. Once water is moving, we check the gutters and downspouts and suggest how to keep the dam from coming back.
Do you cover Seekonk for ice dam removal?
Yes. Seekonk is right next to East Providence and Pawtucket, and we work on both sides of the state line. Massachusetts homeowners can call (508) 399-7600 or send a photo of the ice through the estimate form. Expect a reply the same business day and a free estimate.
