Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in North Smithfield, RI

North Smithfield's old village homes and wind-swept newer houses both collect ice along the eaves. Once that ice traps meltwater, it seeps under the roof and into plaster and trim. We open the ice by hand and help stop the repeat.

We stop North Smithfield ice dams from soaking old plaster and village trim

North Smithfield has two kinds of houses that tend to get ice dams. The first are the older homes in the villages: Slatersville's mill-era houses along the Branch River, and the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century homes in Union Village and Forestdale. Many were built with little or no insulation, and their plaster ceilings and wood trim show water damage quickly. The second are newer homes set on open lots, where the wind has room to move snow around.

In the villages, attic heat is usually behind it. Snow melts on a warm roof, runs down to the cold overhang and refreezes, and the water trapped above that ridge works into the plaster, the window casings and the walls. Out on the open land toward the Massachusetts line, wind does the damage. It packs snow into deep drifts on the sheltered side of the roof, and those drifts feed meltwater to the eave for days after the storm passes.

Our approach is careful and done by hand. We cut channels through the ice dam so the trapped water can drain, while protecting shingles and gutters that may already be old. Afterward we show you where the ice formed and talk through heat cables, cleaning and guards for that spot. Phone (401) 274-3030 or send a photo; replies go out the same business day, and estimates cost nothing.

Why ice dams form on North Smithfield homes

Older village houses

Homes in Slatersville, Union Village and Forestdale often date back generations and were built before modern insulation. Heat escapes into the roof, snow melts on cold days, and ice forms at the overhang where the roof is coldest.

Wind and drifting snow

Newer homes on open, cleared lots catch the full wind after a storm. Snow piles into deep drifts on the downwind side of the roof and along dormers, and that drift melts slowly into the gutter for days, refreezing each night.

Border-country cold

North Smithfield sits along the Massachusetts border, far from the moderating air of Narragansett Bay. Long stretches below freezing, broken by short thaws, give ice dams plenty of chances to form and grow.

Wooded back lots

Where homes back up to woods, oaks and pines shade the roof and drop leaves and needles late in the season. Gutters that go into winter half full freeze solid and cannot take any meltwater.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

What North Smithfield homeowners can do before the next freeze

Clean gutters going into December are the cheapest protection, so we time fall cleanings for after the oaks let go. On older village homes, ask an insulation contractor about air sealing and attic insulation; we do not sell that work, but it addresses the cause. For the eaves where drifts settle or ice forms every winter, we install roof and gutter heat cables, and gutter guards in Proflow aluminum or All Mesh Pro stainless mesh keep wooded-lot gutters clear. After a big storm, a roof rake used from the ground to clear the bottom few feet of the roof takes away the dam's fuel.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do older homes in Slatersville get more ice dams?
Often, yes. Many village homes were built long before modern insulation, so more heat reaches the roof and melts the snow from below. Their plaster and wood trim also show water damage fast. We remove the ice by hand, cutting channels so the water drains, and help you plan prevention for next year.
What does removing an ice dam by hand involve?
Working by hand, we cut channels into the ice dam so the meltwater stuck behind it can find its way off the roof and into the gutters. The goal is to get the water moving while protecting the shingles and gutters, then look at what caused the ice so it does not keep coming back.
Can heat cables help with drifts on my roof?
They help where the drift meets the eave. A cable along the roof edge and through the gutter keeps an open channel, so meltwater from a slow-melting drift can drain instead of refreezing. On a North Smithfield house that takes the wind every storm, we place cable on the side where drifts settle.
Can you quote ice dam work from a photo?
Often, yes. Send a photo of the ice along your roof edge and any stains inside, or call (401) 274-3030. Expect to hear from us that same business day. Estimates from a photo or over the phone are always free, and we let you know the day before we come.
