Snow on a roof above a gutter in winter
Blackstone, Massachusetts

We keep Blackstone ice dams from soaking plaster, framing and trim

Blackstone grew up around the mills on the Blackstone River, and a lot of its housing still dates from that era. Older wood-frame homes and two- and three-family houses were built long before anyone thought about attic insulation. Heat from the living space rises straight into the roof, melts the snow from below, and the water refreezes when it reaches the cold eaves. The result is a ridge of ice with a pool of water behind it and nowhere for that water to go but into the house.

In an older Blackstone house, that water does not just stain a ceiling. It runs into plaster, behind old trim and down inside the walls, where it can sit for weeks. We get it moving again by hand. We cut channels through the ice dam carefully, giving the trapped water a path off the roof and into the gutters, and we take care not to damage old shingles or the gutters themselves while we work.

Then we look at why it happened. On houses that dam up every year, roof and gutter heat cables keep a channel open through the worst of the winter. Gutters that are cleaned before the snow and fitted with guards give meltwater a clear place to go. If ice has bent a gutter or rotted the fascia behind it, we repair that too. Why ice dams form on Blackstone homes

Old houses with thin insulation

Many Blackstone homes date to the mill era and have little insulation between the top floor and the roof. Heat escapes into the roof deck all winter, which keeps the snow melting from below even on bitterly cold days.

Cold air in the river valley

Cold air settles into low ground on still winter nights, and Blackstone sits in the river valley. Homes on lower streets near the river can see hard freezes at night that turn the day's meltwater into fresh ice at the eaves.

Shaded hillside lots

Wooded slopes run down toward the river, and houses on the shaded side of a hill may not see direct sun on the roof for much of the winter. Snow stays put for weeks, feeding the cycle of melting and refreezing.

Frozen downspouts on old gutters

Older gutters on Blackstone homes often have too few downspouts, or downspouts packed with leaves from the valley slopes. When a downspout freezes shut, the whole gutter fills with ice, and the dam starts building right at the gutter edge.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

How to keep ice dams off a Blackstone roof

On an older Blackstone house, prevention comes in layers. First, empty gutters going into winter, so meltwater can actually leave the roof. Second, heat cables along the eaves and in the gutters on the sections that ice up every year, often the north side or a shaded rear roof. Third, gutter guards so leaves from the valley slopes do not refill the gutters in December. The biggest long-term fix is inside: sealing air leaks and adding insulation in the attic. That is a job for an insulation contractor rather than us, but it pays off on these older houses.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove ice dams without damaging the old roof on my Blackstone house?
Yes. We work by hand and cut channels through the ice dam instead of trying to pull the whole thing off, which is what tears up old shingles and bends gutters. The trapped water drains through the channels, and the remaining ice can melt off without stressing the roof edge.
Do you remove ice dams on two- and three-family houses?
Yes. Multifamily houses in Blackstone are routine for us. We work carefully on taller roofs and clear a path for meltwater wherever it is backing up, then talk with you about heat cables for the spots that dam up every winter. We cover Waterford, East Blackstone and the center of town.
Should I clean my gutters before winter in Blackstone?
Yes. A gutter packed with wet leaves freezes into a solid block, and that gives an ice dam a head start at the roof edge. Have them cleaned after the oaks on the valley slopes finish dropping, usually in late fall. Gutter guards help keep them clear through the winter.
Can an ice dam pull my gutters off?
It can. Ice is heavy, and a gutter full of it pulls on its hangers and can bend or tear away from the fascia, especially older gutters held up with spikes. Opening channels gets the water moving and lightens the load. If a gutter was damaged, we repair it or replace it with seamless gutters on hidden hangers. Call (508) 399-7600.
