Snow on a roof above a gutter in winter
Cranston, Rhode Island

We stop Cranston ice dams from soaking ceilings, from Oaklawn capes to western colonials

Many of Cranston's mid-century neighborhoods, including parts of Garden City, Oaklawn and Meshanticut, are full of Cape Cod-style homes, and capes are among the houses most prone to ice dams. The upstairs bedrooms sit under the roof slope with short knee walls and very little room for insulation, so household heat warms the roof deck directly. Snow melts over those rooms, runs to the cold overhang and freezes there, and the ridge of ice grows with each thaw.

Western Cranston has a different winter. The land rises toward the Scituate line, lots are wooded, and snow tends to stay around longer than it does near the bay in Edgewood. Newer colonials out there have bigger roofs with valleys, bump-outs and porch roofs where snow piles up. Pines and oaks shade the north side of those roofs, and shaded eaves are where ice dams return winter after winter.

Wherever you live in Cranston, the fix is the same careful work. We go up and cut channels through the dam by hand so the trapped water drains off the roof and through the gutters, taking care with the shingles and the gutter. Then we look at why it formed. Heat cables, a pre-winter gutter cleaning or gutter guards may keep it from coming back. Call (401) 274-3030 or send a photo. We respond the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Cranston homes

Cape Cod homes with knee walls

Upstairs rooms in a cape sit right under the roof with a short knee wall behind them. Heat leaks into the narrow spaces around those rooms and warms the roof deck, so snow melts high on the roof and freezes at the eave.

Longer-lasting snow in western Cranston

The western half of the city sits higher and farther from the bay than Edgewood or Pawtuxet Village. Snow lingers there, and every day it stays on the roof is another day of melting and refreezing at the edge.

Complex rooflines on newer colonials

Valleys, dormers and low porch roofs on newer homes collect snow and funnel meltwater into tight spots. A dam at the bottom of a valley, or where a porch roof meets a wall, is a common source of interior leaks.

Shade from oaks and pines

Wooded lots keep the north side of a roof in shade all winter. Snow on that side gets little sun to clear it, so it sits on the eave and keeps feeding the ice.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Getting your Cranston roof ready before the first nor'easter

Have the gutters cleaned after the oaks finish dropping their leaves, so meltwater has an open path instead of a frozen clog. On capes and on eaves that dam up every year, roof and gutter heat cables keep a channel open through the worst cold. In western Cranston, where pine needles land in gutters all year, gutter guards help keep them clear going into winter. We do not do insulation work, but for capes in particular, sealing air leaks and adding insulation around the knee walls is often what finally ends the problem. A roof rake can clear the lowest few feet of snow from the ground.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do heat cables work on Cape Cod homes in Cranston?
Yes, they are one of the most practical fixes for capes. Cables run in a zigzag along the eave and through the gutter and downspout, keeping a path open so meltwater can drain instead of freezing at the edge. They work best combined with clean gutters and good attic insulation.
How do you get rid of an ice dam without wrecking the roof?
By hand and with patience. We cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it drains off the roof and through the gutters. Once the water has a path, the leak stops, and the shingles and gutters come through intact.
Do you remove ice dams in western Cranston?
Yes. We work all over Cranston, including the wooded western side of the city, where snow often stays on roofs longer. We also work in Edgewood, Pawtuxet Village, Knightsville, Garden City and Oaklawn. Start with a call to (401) 274-3030 or a photo through our form. We reply the same business day.
Why does my house get ice dams when my neighbor's doesn't?
Usually it comes down to heat loss and shade. A house with more warm air leaking into the attic melts more roof snow, and a roof shaded by trees holds snow longer. Roof shape matters too. A valley or low porch roof can dam up even when the rest of the house is fine.
