We stop West Warwick ice dams from leaking into mill-era homes and shared apartments

The mill villages along the Pawtuxet River were built for workers, long before attic insulation was standard. Many of those houses, duplexes and multi-families still have older plaster ceilings, shallow attics and roof framing with little room for insulation. In winter, heat moves easily from the rooms below into the roof, melting snow from underneath. That water runs to the cold overhang and freezes, and the dam it forms can stretch the length of the building.

On a duplex or multi-family home, the roof is shared, and so is the problem. Water held back by ice over one unit can travel along the eave and come through the ceiling of the unit next to it. Owners in Arctic, Natick and Riverpoint often hear about it from tenants first. Our fix is hand work: narrow channels cut through the dam give the pooled water a route to the gutters, and the shingles and gutter stay intact. We let you know the day before we come, so tenants are not surprised by a ladder at the window.

Farther from the river, West Warwick climbs to neighborhoods of capes, ranches and newer homes, many under oaks and maples. Capes are prone to ice dams because their upstairs rooms sit right under the roof, and tree shade keeps snow on some eaves long after a storm. Being inland, the town also tends to hold snow longer than the shore does. We install heat cables on eaves that dam up every year. Why ice dams form on West Warwick homes

Older mill-era construction

Many homes in the mill villages were built with little or no attic insulation, and some still have very little. Heat flows from the rooms below into the roof deck, melting snow that then refreezes at the overhang.

Long shared roofs

On a duplex or multi-family home, one roof and one gutter line usually run the full width of the building. An ice dam that starts over one unit can spread along the eave, and the water it traps can leak into more than one apartment.

Capes on the hillsides

Capes in the neighborhoods above the river have upstairs bedrooms with knee walls and sloped ceilings. That tight space is hard to insulate well, so the roof above those rooms stays warm and the eave below stays cold.

Inland snow and shade

West Warwick sits inland, where snow often lasts longer on roofs than it does at the shore. Oaks and maples on the hillside streets add shade, keeping snow on the eaves through more cycles of melting and refreezing.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Preparing West Warwick homes and multi-families for ice dam season

Clean gutters before the first hard freeze, because ice forms fastest in gutters already packed with leaves. On the long shared roofs of duplexes and multi-families, heat cables along the problem eaves and through the downspouts keep meltwater moving off the whole roof, not just one side. Gutter guards keep the gutters clear through late fall and winter thaws. We do not do insulation, but in mill-era homes, sealing air leaks and adding attic insulation is often the best long-term step, and a roof rake can help on low eaves you can reach safely from the ground.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove ice dams on a duplex or multi-family home?
Yes. We work on mill-era duplexes and multi-family homes throughout West Warwick. We cut channels through the ice by hand along the whole affected eave, so trapped water can drain before it reaches more apartments, and we let you know the day before we come.
How do you remove an ice dam?
Carefully and by hand. We open a series of channels in the dam so the meltwater behind it has a way to reach the gutters and run off. That careful approach protects your shingles, your gutters and the older trim on mill-era homes.
Can you help with ice dams in Phenix or Crompton?
Yes. We remove ice dams in every West Warwick village, including Phenix, Crompton, Clyde, Centreville, Arctic, Natick and Riverpoint. Phone (401) 274-3030, or snap a picture of the iced-up gutters and send it with the form on this page. We respond the same business day, and estimates are free.
Will heat cables keep my roof completely free of snow?
No, and they are not meant to. Their job is narrower: they hold open a melt path at the eave and down through the gutter and downspout. The rest of the roof snow melts off normally. That drainage path is what keeps water from backing up under the shingles.
