We stop Warwick's nor'easters from leaving behind ice dams that leak into your home

A nor'easter hits Warwick differently depending on where you live. In shore villages like Conimicut, Oakland Beach and Buttonwoods, wind off the bay drives snow across the roof and stacks it on the sheltered side, behind chimneys and against dormers. Storms near the water often finish as rain, which soaks into that snow before a hard freeze. The result is a heavy, icy edge along the gutter and a pool of meltwater behind it looking for a way inside.

Up in Cowesett and out on Warwick Neck, houses tend to be bigger, with long rooflines, valleys, skylights and porch roofs tying into the main house. Each of those is a place where snow collects and ice can trap water. In inland neighborhoods like Norwood, Hoxsie and Gaspee, many homes are capes and ranches with low eaves and little attic space. Whatever the house, the removal is the same: hand-cut channels that let trapped water out, with shingles and gutters left undamaged.

Once the water is moving again, we look at why the dam formed and what will keep it from coming back. Often it is a gutter that went into winter full of leaves, a shaded eave under big trees in Pawtuxet or Cowesett, or a skylight or valley that gathers meltwater. Heat cables, a fall cleaning and gutter guards handle most of those. Send a photo of the ice or call (401) 274-3030. You will hear back the same business day, and we let you know the day before we come.

Why ice dams form on Warwick homes

Drifting snow in shore villages

Wind off Greenwich Bay and Narragansett Bay piles snow on the sheltered side of roofs and around chimneys and dormers. Those drifts run deeper than the snow on the rest of the roof and keep feeding ice to the eave below.

Storms that end as rain

Near the water, winter storms often change to rain at the end. The rain soaks into roof snow and refreezes when the temperature drops, building a dense, heavy dam along the gutter in a single night.

Skylights and valleys on larger homes

Bigger homes in Cowesett and on Warwick Neck often have skylights, valleys and porch roofs. Snow collects above skylights and in valleys, and the meltwater it sends down can freeze at the eave and back up.

Capes and ranches inland

Many inland Warwick homes are capes and ranches. Capes lose heat through upstairs ceilings tucked under the roof, and ranches have low-pitched eaves where trapped water easily reaches under the shingles.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Keeping your Warwick roof clear of ice next winter

Book a gutter cleaning after the oaks in Pawtuxet and Cowesett have dropped their last leaves, so your gutters and downspouts can carry meltwater when the first storm starts to melt off. For eaves below valleys, skylights or drift-prone corners near the shore, roof and gutter heat cables keep a drainage channel open through the cold. Gutter guards keep leaves from building up again before winter is over. As general advice, not a service we offer, ask an insulation contractor to check attic air leaks in capes and older shore homes, and keep a roof rake for low eaves on ranches.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you remove ice dams on waterfront homes in Warwick?
Yes. We remove ice dams in Conimicut, Oakland Beach, Buttonwoods, Warwick Neck and every other Warwick village. Our method is hand work, opening channels in the ice so the water behind the dam can escape. The number is (401) 274-3030, or send a photo through the form, and we get back to you the same business day with a free estimate.
Why does ice build up around my skylight?
Skylights lose more heat than the roof around them, so snow above and beside them melts faster. That water runs down to the cold eave and freezes, and sometimes ice forms right below the skylight itself. Keeping the eave open with heat cables and clean gutters helps the meltwater drain.
Should I try to remove the ice myself?
We do not recommend it. Ice dams are heavy, roofs and ladders are slippery in winter, and it is easy to damage shingles or gutters or get hurt. A roof rake from the ground is fine for loose snow on low eaves. For the ice itself, call us and we will open it carefully by hand.
Can heat cables go on gutters as well as the roof?
Yes. We install heat cables along the roof edge and inside the gutters and downspouts. The roof section keeps a path open through the snow at the eave, and the gutter and downspout sections keep that water from freezing on its way off the house. Together they give meltwater a way out.
