We open East Greenwich ice dams before meltwater finds the dormers and valleys

East Greenwich has two winters. Down by Greenwich Cove and the streets around Main Street, the bay keeps things milder, and a snowfall often turns to rain or melts within a day or two. Climb west toward Frenchtown and the newer neighborhoods on higher ground, and the snow hangs on longer. Both ends get ice dams, just for different reasons: quick freeze-thaw swings near the water, and long-lasting snow up the hill.

The houses add to it. Older homes in the historic district have steep roofs, dormers and additions that meet the main roof at tight angles. The larger colonials farther west often have several valleys, a bonus room over the garage and a skylight or two. Every one of those spots is a place where snow piles up, melts unevenly and freezes at the edge. When meltwater cannot get past that ice, it backs up under the shingles.

We remove ice dams by hand, cutting narrow channels through the ice so the water pooled behind it can run off the roof and into the gutters. It is patient work, and it keeps the shingles and gutters in one piece. After the roof is draining, we can add roof and gutter heat cables along the eaves and valleys that keep damming. Why ice dams form on East Greenwich homes

Freeze-thaw near the cove

Homes close to Greenwich Cove see snow, sleet and rain trade places within a single storm. The roof snow turns to slush, then a cold night locks it into a solid ridge at the eave. Those quick swings build dams fast.

Dormers on historic homes

The older houses near Main Street often have steep roofs broken up by dormers. Snow slides off the steep sections and piles against the dormer sides and in the corners beside them, where meltwater freezes and backs up toward the window trim.

Valleys on west-side colonials

Newer colonials in western East Greenwich tend to have complex rooflines, with valleys where two roof planes meet. Valleys collect the most snow and channel the most melt, so they are a common starting point for ice dams on these houses.

Big oaks on the hill

Wooded lots in the western part of town keep many roofs in shade through the winter. Snow on the shaded side lingers, and gutters left full of late-falling oak leaves freeze into a solid block that holds the ice in place.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Stopping the next ice dam on your East Greenwich roof

Most of the prevention happens before the first storm. Have the gutters cleaned after the oaks finish dropping, so meltwater has an open path in January. On valleys, dormer corners and eaves that dam every year, roof and gutter heat cables keep a channel clear. A Proflow or All Mesh Pro gutter guard means the oak leaves don't pile back in. Inside, attic insulation, air sealing around recessed lights and attic hatches, and good ventilation cut the heat that starts the melt. That is work for an insulation contractor, not us, but it is often the biggest fix.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove an ice dam on an older home near Main Street without damaging it?
Yes. We work by hand, carefully cutting channels through the ice so the trapped water has a way out. Going slowly keeps the shingles, flashing and gutters intact, which matters on older homes with dormers and detailed trim. Call (401) 274-3030 for a free estimate.
Why do ice dams keep forming in the valleys of my East Greenwich colonial?
Valleys gather snow from two roof planes and send all of that melt to one spot at the eave. If the attic below is warm or the gutter at the bottom is clogged, the water freezes there first. Heat cables run up the valley and along the eave keep it draining, and a clean gutter gives the water somewhere to go.
Do gutter guards cause ice dams?
No. Ice dams start on the roof, from heat escaping the attic and snow melting unevenly. Guards keep leaves out of the gutter so meltwater has a clear path instead of freezing in a packed trough. On homes that dam often, we can pair guards with heat cables.
When should East Greenwich gutters be cleaned before winter?
Yes, and later is better than earlier. Oaks on the west side hang onto their leaves well into November, so a cleaning in October can leave the gutters full again by the first freeze. A gutter packed with wet leaves turns into a block of ice that gives an ice dam a head start.
