Split-levels. Mill villages. Ice opened by hand.

Ice Dam Removal & Prevention in Lincoln, RI

When a Lincoln ice dam holds water at the eaves, that water finds a way under the shingles and into the walls of a split-level or an old mill-village house. We open a path for it and help stop the next one.

We stop Lincoln ice dams from pushing meltwater under your shingles

Lincoln's houses fall into two broad groups, and both get ice dams for their own reasons. Along the Blackstone, the mill-village homes of Manville, Albion, Saylesville and Lonsdale are old, often lightly insulated and built close together. Up the hills and toward Lincoln Woods you find raised ranches, split-levels and colonials from the postwar decades on, many with several roof sections meeting at different heights. Each layout traps ice in its own spots.

On a split-level, the classic problem is the step between roofs. Snow slides off the upper roof onto the lower one, piles against the wall, then melts and refreezes right where the two meet. In the old villages it is heat loss: a warm attic melts the snow, and the water freezes at the cold eave. Add tall oaks shading the roof and gutters still packed with late leaves, and the ice has everything it needs.

Our method is careful and done entirely by hand. We cut channels through the ice so the meltwater pooled behind it can drain through the gutter instead of backing up under the roofing. Then we tell you plainly what caused it and which fixes are worth the money. Our number is (401) 274-3030, or send a photo through the form; the estimate is free, and the reply comes the same business day.

Why ice dams form on Lincoln homes

Split-level and raised ranch rooflines

Many Lincoln neighborhoods are full of split-levels and raised ranches. Where an upper roof drains onto a lower one, snow piles up and ice forms against the wall, a spot that leaks into the room below once water gets behind the siding or flashing.

Older mill-village houses

Homes in Manville, Albion and Saylesville were built long before modern insulation. Heat from the living space warms the roof deck, so snow melts even on a cold day and the runoff freezes at the overhang, building the dam a little higher with each cycle.

Oak shade near Lincoln Woods

Tall oaks around Lincoln Woods and on wooded lots throughout town shade roofs in winter and hold their leaves into late fall. A shaded roof keeps snow longer, and a gutter still full of leaves cannot carry meltwater away.

Low-slope additions and porch roofs

On many Lincoln homes, sunrooms, family-room additions and porch roofs were added over the years with shallower pitches than the main house. Meltwater moves slowly across them and freezes before it reaches the edge, so these smaller roofs are often where the first leak appears.

How we handle ice dams

Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.

Channels cut by hand

We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.

Heat cables

Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Clear gutters before winter

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.

Heading off next winter's ice dams in Lincoln

Lincoln's oaks are the reason to schedule your last gutter cleaning late, once the leaves are actually down, so the gutters go into December empty. If you are tired of that timing game, gutter guards keep the leaves out, and All Mesh Pro also carries a no-clog guarantee. For the step where a split-level's upper roof meets the lower one, or any eave that ices every year, we install roof and gutter heat cables. Pulling the first few feet of snow off the eaves with a roof rake, from the ground, also takes away the ice's fuel. Attic insulation and ventilation are the long-term fix; you would hire an insulation contractor for that, since we do not do it.

The gentlemen that were here were very courteous and made sure we were happy with the job before they left.

Paul K.Customer review

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!

Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!

Frequently Asked Questions

Will opening the ice dam hurt my older Manville roof?
Not when it is done carefully, which is why we work by hand. We cut channels through the ice dam so the trapped water drains, keeping our tools off the shingles underneath. Older roofs in Manville and Albion may already have brittle shingles, so that care matters, and your roof and gutters come through intact.
Why does my split-level get ice where the two roofs meet?
Snow slides off the upper roof and piles onto the lower one against the wall. That deep pile insulates the roof underneath, heat from the house melts it from below, and the water refreezes where it cannot drain. A heat cable along that seam and a clear lower gutter usually help a lot.
When should my last fall gutter cleaning be in Lincoln?
Later than most people think. Lincoln's oaks drop leaves into late November, so an October cleaning can be undone in a few weeks. A clear gutter lets meltwater drain instead of freezing in place. We clean the gutters and downspouts by hand and tidy up before we leave.
Do you work in Lime Rock and Fairlawn?
Yes. We remove ice dams and handle prevention work everywhere in Lincoln, including Lime Rock, Fairlawn, Quinnville, Manville and Saylesville. A photo of the ice or a call to (401) 274-3030 is all it takes to start, with a free estimate and an answer the same business day.
