We stop Woonsocket ice dams from leaking into third-floor ceilings
Woonsocket's housing was built for mill workers, long before anyone worried about energy codes. Many of the triple-deckers and two-families on Social, Fairmount and Constitution Hill went up with little or nothing in the attic, so heat from the top apartment rises straight into the roof deck. Snow on that roof melts from underneath, slides down to the cold overhang and freezes again. A week of January nights like that leaves a ridge of ice holding back a pool of water.
The trouble is where that water goes. On a three-story building it backs up under the shingles and shows up first as a brown stain on a top-floor ceiling, often in a unit where the tenant may not mention it right away. Stacked front porches with their own shallow roofs catch ice too, and gutters loaded with ice can tear loose and drop onto the steps or the driveway below. By spring, the damage is in the plaster, the trim and the insulation.
When we come out, the work is done by hand. Working slowly from the roof edge, we cut channels through the ice so the meltwater pooled behind it has a way out to the gutters, and the shingles and gutter come through unharmed. After that, we look at why it formed: clogged gutters, a shaded roof, an attic that runs warm. Send a photo of the ice through our form or call (401) 274-3030, and you will hear back the same business day with a free estimate.

Warm top-floor apartments
Older triple-deckers often have little insulation between the top unit and the roof. Heat escapes upward, melts the underside of the snow, and the water refreezes at the overhang where the roof is cold. The warmer the top apartment, the faster that ridge of ice grows.
Low-slope roofs and stacked porches
Many multi-family buildings here have shallow main roofs and porch roofs stacked one above another. Water moves slowly on a gentle pitch, so it has more time to freeze before it reaches the gutter, and a small porch roof can ice over completely.
Hills and close neighbors
On Woonsocket's hillside streets, houses sit close together and shade each other's roofs for much of a winter day. The shaded side keeps its snow long after the sunny side clears, which gives ice more days to build along the eave.
Blackstone Valley cold
Woonsocket sits in the river valley along the Massachusetts line, well north of the bay's milder air. Hard freezes follow most storms and thaws tend to be short. That pattern of quick melt and quick refreeze is exactly what feeds an ice dam.
How we handle ice dams
Careful work by hand, then a plan so they don't come back.
Channels cut by hand
We carefully cut channels through the ice dam so the water trapped behind it can drain off the roof and out through the gutters, without tearing into the shingles.
Heat cables
Roof-edge and gutter heat cables keep a path open for meltwater in the spots that ice up every winter.

Packed gutters hold water that freezes solid. A fall gutter cleaning, or gutter guards, lets meltwater drain.
Before next winter: keeping ice off Woonsocket roofs and porches
Start in the fall. A gutter cleaning after the leaves drop gives meltwater an open path, and on a tall building that matters even more, because nobody wants to fix a frozen gutter three stories up in February. A set of Proflow aluminum or All Mesh Pro stainless mesh guards stops the leaves from coming back. On eaves and porch roofs that ice up every winter, we install roof and gutter heat cables. The deeper fix is in the attic: more insulation and better air sealing over the top apartment keep the roof cold. That is a job for an insulation contractor rather than a gutter company, but it is worth asking about.

One section of my gutter system had a hole in it. Mr. Gutter had great reviews, so I called them. They were very quick to respond, I sent a photo, and within minutes they gave me a reasonable quote to replace it. It was just replaced, they were very pleasant, would definitely use them again, highly recommend!
Easy to schedule. They came out within a few days and did a great job. I can tell because the nor'easter hit us two days later!
